OK, since we’re back on topic and the Larrys are having the weekend off, here’s what I think about the Pont-Saint-Esprit case.
There are two basic theories. The orthodox view is that it was a simple accident. Barley flour became contaminated with ergot – it can happen – and the victims went down with LSD-like poisoning and hallucinations as a result. The new theory is that the town was deliberately sprayed with LSD as part of a covert CIA operation to test the effects of the drug on an unsuspecting population, a la MK-Ultra.
The second theory sounds plausible but it is based solely on remarks made by unnamed alleged former intelligence operatives.
My heart sinks when I hear evidence like this. It may in reality be the best evidence available and all that we need to get to the truth. On the other hand it may not. It may be garbage. We never really know.
As an English empiricist at heart I like material evidence best of all. It never lies. We can misinterpret it, but it never lies.
So I’d like to know what happened when the French police investigated the case at the time. Did they determine that every single victim had eaten the bread in question? Assuming they conducted forensic tests on the remaining flour from the same batch suspected to have been the cause of the contamination, did they find traces of ergot?
If the answer to both those questions is yes then I’m with the orthodox theory. If the answer is no then I’m with the new theory.

Well now that’s just silly. Financial aid is amazing in America. For instance, at a number of top schools, if your family makes less than $60K, everything is free for all 4 years. If they make more than that but less than $100K, there’s a tuition waiver.
And school loans aren’t so horrible.
