Olson was part of a team which was developing aerosol delivery systems for biological weapons that included staphylococcus enterotoxin, Venezuelan equine encephalo- myelitis, and anthrax.
Olson wanted to concentrated on counter- biological warfare, trying to find vaccines and special clothing that would protect against attack.” He despised the use of mind-controlling drugs, considering their use a form of torture.
While working at Porton, Olson updated a team of researchers from Sussex university who had read secret documents of the CIA’s MK-ULTRA programme into mind control, brain-washing and torture using LSD and other substances that possessed psychoactive properties. He told then he thought the research ‘was unethical’ and designed to ‘control’ the mind such that it could be used to carry out psyops operations and assassinations.

LSD, like all psychoactive chemicals and plants, can be either a powerful medicine or a dangerous drug, depending on your perspective and the circumstances of your exposure to its effects.
I’m not sure that the Telegraph article stands up to close scrutiny – there seem to be some reasonable doubts about the claims – but what cannot be denied is that our culture has failed to come to terms with the implications of the so called “psychedelic” experience.
Afterall, many cultures around the world seem to value and benefit from the visionary or “altered state” experience. We are rather unique in our prohibitionist attitude in this respect. Alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, sugar are our sanctioned intoxicants – and they are not very inspiring, all things considered. Is there a conspiracy here? Or are we not mature enough to make informed decisions regarding our intoxicants of choice?
Magic mushrooms, which grow abundantly in Britain, have been recently declared illegal here. Why? Were they causing as much damage to our society as alcohol does?

‘I dare say…’ Err, no – I’d suggest you don’t know what you’re talking about, and that you should stick to discussing human rights.
It’s a truism that you can discover more about people by moving away from subjects they prefer to talk about (often themselves – or, as it happens, human rights), and instead discussing some other topic. In this case I’d say the willingness of folk on this blog to talk unadulterated mince doesn’t do much for the perceived veracity of their more, so to speak, on-message pronouncements.
I’ve been reading this blog for about three weeks or so, and I have to say this thread has pretty well put me off reading the comments in future.

I spoke honestly from my own experience, though many years ago. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you. What you described is not an experience I’ve had, or would want to have.
I took LSD once, in a spirit of curiosity and scientific endeavour. I followed good advice and did it in a place I felt comfortable (my flat) and with close friends whom I trusted. The LSD was of good quality and not adulterated.
It was a horrific experience. I thought I was dying. I went to my bedroom and crawled head first into my sleeping bag. I stayed like that for hours, waiting for the effects to wear off. It was as though I was trying to return to the womb.
At least I knew what had caused the problems. Giving it to people who are unaware is a dreadful thing to do.
