Gruesome images are instinctively haunting and difficult, not motivational or enlightening.

    ,
The debate is not about horror movies, and the like. The notion is explorations of the need for oodles of money getting spent on making killing even more pernicious by the use of weapons of fire now and keep on killing for generations to come, all in the way of maintaining the full spectrum dominance. If this is not motivation enough to stop such a waste of money, and such a callous disregard for human rights, then shove your enlightenment where sun don’t shine.

As ever a good sayan jumps to aid us all to start thinking straight and stop watching our tax dollars at work, as well as watching the results of diversion of the said tax dollars at home.

The Fuel Pools of Fukushima: THE GREATEST SHORT-TERM THREAT TO HUMANITY

    .
“Based on U.S. Energy Department data, assuming a total of 11,138 spent fuel assemblies are being stored at the Dai-Ichi site, nearly all, which is (sic) in pools. They contain roughly 336 million curies (~1.2 E+19 Bq) of long-lived radioactivity. About 134 million curies is Cesium-137 — roughly 85 times the amount of Cs-137 released at the Chernobyl accident as estimated by the U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP). The total spent reactor fuel inventory at the Fukushima-Daichi site contains nearly half of the total amount of Cs-137 estimated by the NCRP to have been released by all atmospheric nuclear weapons testing, Chernobyl, and world-wide reprocessing plants (~270 million curies or ~9.9 E+18 Becquerel).
    .
It is important for the public to understand that reactors that have been operating for decades, such as those at the Fukushima-Dai-Ichi site have generated some of the largest concentrations of radioactivity on the planet.” (Robert Alvarez, former Senior Policy Adviser to the Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security and the Environment at the U.S. Department of Energy)…

    Quite right Cameron.

    . Corrupt elites.
Cameron will cite the Tunisian official who prompted the fruit seller Mohammed Bouazizi to set himself alight after refusing to let him sell his goods. ++ “Corruption denies the people their economic and political stake – the citizenship, the job and the voice that they want. Worse still, it breeds a cynicism and a sense of rage.++”
    .
This is from a dreadful puff piece in the Guardian by a Nicholas Watt. Note throughout we read Cameron WILL say. Has Watt just reproduced a press handout? Before working for the Guardian, he was at the Times.

Thanks for that, mary, Fukushima is one big cover up and the nuclear industry is desperate to maske out that they are irreplacable, which they are not.

Slightly OT, a good review of Guenther Grass’s nuclear poem from Prof. Dabashi.

It sat on the complaint for over three years, always proudly announcing that it was investigating it to give the appearance of impartiality. Meanwhile the ICC jumped to attention in less than three weeks when the U.S. government, which is not a signatory to the treaty, wanted to go to war against Libya, justifying Western aggression with bogus charges against the Libyan regime.”

Who was it whom raised the question: “Why would the US and toadies use Uzbekistan to ship out their murder kit”? (paraphrasing here)
    ,
Thanks to him/her, I have been exploring the why? One notion that somehow has escaped everyones attention, and not debated has been:
    ,
What if the murder kit is not for transshipment out of the area? Instead the kit is sent to Uzbekistan and then divided in among the “Friendly” regimes and kept there under the pretext: for quick access back to the Afghan theater if the need arises?
    ,
This shipment scenario will be taking the edge of US piling equipment into the Russia’s backyard, however once the stuff is in Uzbekistan, then suddenly a change of plan to keep the stuff in the area and pay some kind of rent for it storage in differing countries around the area. Presto there will be at least four other US military bases springing up right on the Russians, Chinese doorsteps without a great deal of fuss.

What we haven’t been told is what has already happened to the fuel pools. If you read through the massive amounts of NRC internal communications that have been released under FOIA requests, you’ll find their real best estimates of what has already been released (in bits they forgot o black out) – especially from the partial fuel pool fire in unit 4 on March 15th. Also interesting are the US Navy readings of effective thyroid dose in Tokyo area.

    Received 28 July 2011. Revised 16 December 2011. Accepted 18 December 2011. Available online 9 January 2012.

    Abstract

It is shown which information can be extracted from the monitoring of radionuclides emitted from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant and transported to Europe. In this part the focus will be on the analysis of the concentration ratios. While 131I, 134Cs and 137Cs were reported by most stations, other detected radionuclides, reported by some, are 95Nb, 129mTe, 132Te, 132I, 136Cs and 140La. From their activity ratios a mean burn-up of 26.7 GWd/t of the fuel from which they originated is estimated. Based on these data, inventories of radionuclides present at the time of the accident are calculated. The caesium activity ratios indicate emissions from the core of unit 4 which had been unloaded into the fuel storage pool prior to the accident.
    Highlights

► Activity ratios of Fukushima radionuclides in air are estimated. ► A mean burn-up of 26.7 GWd/t is derived from the caesium ratios. ► Fuel inventories at the time of the accident are calculated. ► Fuel in storage pool of unit 4 contributed to emissions.

Afghanistan doesnt just effect the people that live their. It also effects others. It has been used as a torture and rape centre for the Americans. Have we forgot about Dr AAfia sidiqi who was held there for 5 years, tortured, raped, paraded naked, made pregnant, had an abortion carried out on her by force, and then convicted for 86 years on made up charges.

    Clark,
enformable.com has the best processed collection from the requests they have submitted. There are thousands of pages of emails and telephone transcripts. What we don’t get though is the results of the simulations they ran on long term health effects. The documents show that they ran the simulations but they must not be made public.
    .
Concerning the linked report above: Due to the differing half lives of Cs-137 and Cs-134 the activity ratio changes with time. It is possible to calculate how long it has been since the fuel was last critical.
    .
According to the NRC internal documents, what TEPCO called a “lube oil” fire was a fuel pool fire (which is what the Japanese government formally told the IAEA it was as well before changing their story a few hours later).
    .
Emissions continued on and off from the pool for several more days until TEPCO managed to refill it. NRC documents state that at least five people (who may or may not have been in the JSDF) were fatally exposed within the first few days of the incident.

Quite a bit of noise on Twitter in the past 3-4 days about this story:
    .
Japan’s former Ambassador to Switzerland, Mr. Mitsuhei Murata, was invited to speak at the Public Hearing of the Budgetary Committee of the House of Councilors on March 22, 2012, on the Fukushima nuclear power plants accident. Before the Committee, Ambassador Murata strongly stated that if the crippled building of reactor unit 4—with 1,535 fuel rods in the spent fuel pool 100 feet (30 meters) above the ground—collapses, not only will it cause a shutdown of all six reactors but will also affect the common spent fuel pool containing 6,375 fuel rods, located some 50 meters from reactor 4. In both cases the radioactive rods are not protected by a containment vessel; dangerously, they are open to the air. This would certainly cause a global catastrophe like we have never before experienced. He stressed that the responsibility of Japan to the rest of the world is immeasurable. Such a catastrophe would affect us all for centuries. Ambassador Murata informed us that the total numbers of the spent fuel rods at the Fukushima Daiichi site excluding the rods in the pressure vessel is 11,421 (396+615+566+1,535+994+940+6375).
    .
I asked top spent-fuel pools expert Mr. Robert Alvarez, former Senior Policy Adviser to the Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security and the Environment at the U.S. Department of Energy, for an explanation of the potential impact of the 11,421 rods.

I received an astounding response from Mr. Alvarez [updated 4/5/12]:

After quoting Robert Alvarez, the article goes on:
    .
“Many of our readers might find it difficult to appreciate the actual meaning of the figure, yet we can grasp what 85 times more Cesium-137 than the Chernobyl would mean. It would destroy the world environment and our civilization. This is not rocket science, nor does it connect to the pugilistic debate over nuclear power plants. This is an issue of human survival.”
    .
I know very little, personally, about the science/engineering of it, and all the possible risks at Fukushima. I only know what I read. But there hasn’t been one word on RTE, BBC, or SkyNews, to my knowledge. Talk about keeping schtum!

    @anon,
    .
Thanks for your reply to my post.
    .
By no means I tried to diminish Ambassador’s input in highlighting the scale of human rights violations in Uzbekistan. As someone who has lived both in Uzbekistan and in Kashmir (believe, for much longer than a few weeks each), as well as in a few other developing countries, I only tryied to put things in perspective. I still maintain that the scale of human rights violations in Uzbekistan and in India cannot be compared, to the disadvantage of India.
    .
Yes, it is much worse to be a political opponent in Uzbekistan than in India (although I recall media and political opponents being brutally beaten there, too – vide e.g. Tehelka case). It is bad to be a child there during summer months, too.
    .
However, it is usually plainly dreadful to be a woman in India all the year round. It is also very little fun to be very poor in India – IMHO much worse than in Uzbekistan where the state at least guarantees you access to basic healthcare and certainty that you won’t die of starvation.
    .
I am sorry I used the same argument as someone else. This is coincidence.
    .
Don’t take me wrong, I am not anti-India, I love being there, along with the sense of freedom you can hardly experience anywhere else on the planet (and certainly not in Uzbekistan). But I try not to be blind. Indian security forces routinely execute dozens of civilians in Kashmir in false-flag “terrorist attacks” before nearly every visit of a high US official to Delhi (the Chhatisinghpora massacre before Clinton’s 2002 visit being the most vivid example in my memory).
    .
To put things short, government of Uzbekistan is no fun – but governments of many other countries are far worse towards their population. That’s my firm opinion.

Here’s a few bits from just one document on March 20th. You’ll find numerous other references both to simulations and readings out of line with what the Japanese reported in public. Note that the US Navy briefed the ambassador that thyroid dose was 100 times that announced by the Japanese government. The US Navy is expert at that sort of thing.

DON COOL: …Without going to too-far speculation at the moment, it would appear that a good amount of the volatile radioactive material that might have been in that spent fuel pool is now laying on the ground in the 13-plus miles northwest of the facility.
    .
…LARRY CAMPER: Yeah, we’re thinking the exact same thing. We’re all in the same place. We’re ruling out lube oil fire. I don’t think any of us are buying that.

DAVE SKEEN: Yeah. Well, I’m still going to go back to we haven’t seen any steaming coming out of Unit 4 since early in the event, which leads us to believe that there’s no water there to steam.

JOHN MONNINGER: Yep. We agree with you. So the only thing I’m saying is, you know, we would be interested in the calculations but we’ve got to be extremely careful what we do with them.

DAVE SKEEN: Yeah. We’ll leave that up to you, but we’ll get that information for you guys to have in your pocket anyway.
    ..
    ..
    ..

JOHN MONNINGER: The — are you ready?

They [US Navy] took some samples [South of Tokyo], and the sample is in microcuries per milliliter, and they say that’s the equivalent of 150 millirem per hour.

JOHN MONNINGER: So what were you told about the equivalent thyroid?

    KATHY: 1.5 millirem per hour.

JOHN MONNINGER: So that’s a factor of 100 different than what’s being reported here.

    MALE PARTICIPANT: Yeah.

JOHN MONNINGER: They’re [US NAVY] saying 150 millirem per hour.

    (Simultaneous conversation.)

JOHN MONNINGER: And that’s what’s, being briefed to the ambassador right now.

In fact they evacuated people into one of the most heavily contaminated zones right in the major fallout plume. Worth clicking through to the actual NRC document quoted.

Radiation in Namie-machi, Fukushima Almost Exceeded OSHA 90-Day Limit for Radiation Worker in 14 Days Last Year

The cumulative radiation dose at MP (monitoring post) 32 in Fukushima Prefecture from March 23 to April 4, 2011 was 11,630 microsieverts (or 11.63 millisieverts), almost exceeding the OSHA 90-day limit for radiation worker of 12,500 microsieverts in 14 days.

My guess is if the radiation had been measured from March 11, 2011, it would have surpassed that limit long before March 23, 2011.

From Enformable’s digging of the NRC FOIA documents, 3-page email dated April 9, 2011 says on page 3:

    MP32

The U.S. 50-mile radius adequately protects public health, but the Japanese 20-kilometer (12 mile) radius may not protect the health of the general public, pregnant female radiation workers, or radiation workers who remain longer than 2 weeks near MP32.

MP32 remained MP32 in the Ministry of Education and Science (MEXT) monitoring data, until April 11, 2011 when the location was finally named. It was Akougi District of Namie-machi in Fukushima. Why was the location finally named that day? Because that was the day the government announced the planned evacuation zone that included Akougi and most of Namie-machi that was not already inside the 20-kilometer no-entry zone.

Akougi is located at 31 kilometers northwest of Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, outside the no-entry zone. The district was finally declared planned evacuation zone on April 11, 2011, because the annual cumulative radiation dose was expected to exceed 20 millisieverts.
