Straw in the Stink 1095

The Mail on Sunday is doing a very good job on the odious Jack Straw’s involvement in torture and persecution. I think that at last the truth has entered the established narrative. There is a little box in the report about my own evidence to Scotland Yard. I will type it out here as the Mail’s box format here is not internet searchable:

“Torture” Evidence Handed to the Yard

Further pressure was piled on Jack Straw last night over the “rendition” of Libyan dissident Abdel Hakim Belhadj after sensitive documents were handed to Scotland tard detectives.

Craig Murray, former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan, passed the documents to police as part of the inquiry into the behaviour of Ministers and intelligence officials over the detention of Mr Belhadj in Bangkok in March 2004.

The opponent of Colonel Gadaffi was flown to Tripoli, where he claims he was tortured.

Mr Straw, who was Foreign Secretary at the time, has denied ever condoning the use of torture to extract information.

But the documents appear to cast doubt on that position.

One memo, headed “Uzbekistan: Intelligence Possibly Obtained Under Torture” contains minutes of a meeting Mr Murray held with senior Foreign and Commonwealth officials on March 8, 2003 to discuss his concern that the UK could be in breach of international law by possessing intelligence obtained by torture.

The minute, dated March 10 2003, quoted Linda Duffield, then the FCO’s Director of Wider Europe, apparently justifying the use of such material as part of the fight against terrorism.

A second memo, dated March 14 2003, and written by Simon McDonald – the Straw’s principal Private Secretary – to Ms Duffield says Straw has read the minutes and “agrees that you handled this very well”.

Mr Murray is understood to have told police that during Mr Straw’s time at the FCO diplomats were told to only refer to the policy on torture verbally.

Mr Murray said last night “My evidence stated that Jack Straw introduced a policy of allowing evidence obtained by torture to be used. I also told them that written evidence had been destrpyed, and we were told to not commit details into writing.”

There is a slight misquote in the above. It should say Jack Straw introduced a policy of allowing intelligence obtained by torture, not evidence. In fact it was specifically stated such intelligence would not be produced as evidence in court (people were imprisoned without charge or rendered instead). The instruction not to put things in writing was given to me personally, I don’t know if others were told the same. As I was the only one protesting, perhaps not.

These links are to the documents in question.

The first two were obtained by Freedom of Information Act request. Details of the CIA’s colllusion with the Karimiv regime’s torturers have been redacted by the FCO. Last week Jack Straw came out and argued strongly for the effective abolition of the Freedom of Information Act. Now there is a coincidence for you.

    It was only a matter of time before someone would childishly try and paint criticism of the Behaviour of the Israel regime and the behaviour of Zionists as ‘Anti-Semitic’. NMopt onyl is it childish, it is so 20th century and behaviour you would expect from the repulsive hate group the ADL

    Article by a Greek journalist on the big, pro-austerity, parties in Greece pandering to and allying with the neo-nazi Golden Dawn party against Greens and socialists and other non-fascist anti-austerity parties. Also on police and ‘Golden Dawn’ thugs jointly attacking anti-austerity demonstrators – echoes of the G8 protests in Genoa in 2000 when under Berlusconi’s government black clad thugs with iron bars were seen coming out of police stations.

    Is Craig okay? Does anyone know? I keep checking back for a new post and there hasn’t been one. I can’t read 700+ comments, can someone just post a status report? Thanks.

  • Fedup

    Me In Us,
    Craig is OK but pretty busy trying to earn a living and currently is indisposed, so if you want a new post you will have to wait. However meantime read the comments and enjoy the breadth of the information at your disposal, although you can do well by skipping the ziofuckwits comments, and spend your time more productively by reading less than seven hundred.

    @Fedup, thank you! I do enjoy the comments here, I just can’t handle 700, and I’ve been getting more worried about Craig by the day. Hope he’s enjoying whatever he’s doing, and I also hope he comes back soon. Best wishes to all here. Thanks again.

    Clark:
    .
    My man, please don’t be so hard on yourself. You don’t need to apologise because it is completely unnecessary. You were understandably going through a rough patch (I wanted to send you an email, but couldn’t find your address at the time). You are a great commentator and mod, no need to change your style. Don’t be paranoid about commenting, you have valuable insight and I don’t see your moderation conflicting with your comments. When I said I didn’t like to post OT, your moderation had not even entered my mind as an issue. I’m sure just about everyone here agrees you contribute a great deal to this site.

    Patients ‘treated in corridors’, claims Royal College of Nursing
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-18026538#
    .
    The only response from Simon Burns is to say it should be happening.
    .
    ‘Health minister Simon Burns said: “There is no excuse for patients to be left waiting on trolleys.

    “The NHS has beds free and available, and hospitals should be supporting their nurses to ensure that patients are admitted to them quickly. We will not hesitate to take action where we find hospitals failing to do so.”‘
    .
    It is happening Mr Burns, Minister of State for ‘Health Services’. Get on your bike or on your jet and find out. NuLabour did at least put an end to this corridor treatment by imposing a maximum 4 hour wait although this resulted in tremendous pressure on the staff. I am not sure if this 4 hr maximum wait is still in operation.
    ~~~
    He seems to suffer from an unfortunate long standing case of foot in mouth disease. I like his nickname 🙂 He went to school in Ghana I see.
    I’ll run with you Komodo, let’s take another look at ‘The Record’ -:
    * UN resolutions violated, ignored: 68
    .
    * Countries attacked, invaded, violated: Egypt, Jordon, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia.
    .
    * Countries occupied for years: Egypt, Lebanon, Syria.
    .
    * Countries currently occupying: Syria.
    .
    * Territory illegally annexed: Golan Heights, Jerusalem, Palestinian territories.
    .
    * Wars started: 1956, 1967, 1982.
    .
    * Possesses weapons of mass destruction: Yes.
    .
    * Possesses nuclear weapons: Yes.
    .
    * Most notable atrocity against civilians: 17,500 Lebanese citizens killed in the 1982 invasion of Lebanon.
    .
    * Currently under a regime of UN sanctions: No.
    .
    (Richard B. Du Boff of Bryn Mawr University 2002)
    .
    My footnote:
    .
    There is a compelling case that Israel used HUMINT and the ELINT capabilities to track and quietly protect terrorists without the terrorists knowing it. It also has PROMIS software. In that role Israel has served as a cutout for UK interests and afforded MI6 with some layer of protection. Israel is right now positioning itself to take charge of Middle Eastern affairs.
    .
    In doing this the financial and military powers in an openly fascist world order will continue to drive humanity toward the brink of destruction.
    Good tyo hear from you Suhayl and Cheebacow, thanks for the little trash trailer Clark, and for yuour moderating here. Norfolk last week saw heavy air manouvres on at least two days, mock dog fighting as well as high level attack flights with some low overflights similar to bombing raids to attack surface to air missile batteries.
    looks like our DVD record of 12 days from conception to delivery through doors, during the last GE, will not be broken by his race to finish his deadline for the Burns manuscript.
    The Levenson enquiery seems like a big fat hand stroking a big fat cats back over and over again, the purring noises are supposed to replace the justice these ‘mongers’ should feel. Lock them up and let them roast, fine the pants of them and ensure that Rupert’s NI tax rate is exactly as it should be. The tax avoidances of high finance and lolly pop men like Rupe’ are now becoming a bain in the treasuries gut.
    The ‘all out war against islam’ lecture cicuit from last year, teaching young officers to hate all that is islam, really shows that depravity has no bounds. The hunderstirke and trouble in the west bank can only increase if Israel goes to war with all and sundry, soon they will have to employ US soldiers on road blocks and at harrasment points. Israel is a racist apartheid state.
    But so is Britain, but here we use the threat of racismn to cover up rape, pim[pinmg and sex trafficking by Pakistani and Afghan nationals. We don’t want to talk about their customs, we hide it away unmder the rubric ‘cultural differences’ when it is clearly not OK to marry and have children with your cousin.
    We do not contemplate this debate, because it highlights opuir ghetto housing policies, our lack of integration and our lack of being able to control our own indigenous paedophile rings.
    When I hear politicians get up in the house of commons and argue for child sex offenders to have their records reliquisehd afte a ‘reasonable’ time, I feel sick and grab the axe to make some firewood, otherwise I would smack myself in the mouth.
    I have lived amongst Pakistani’s for a month and find some of their cultural practises do not stand up to our lax western morals. Dating by Pakistany young people that like each other, is shunned, who is fit for each other is down to the parents, total control and pressure by a family tribe that is looking after the ‘hopnour’ of the family. Sexually frustated groups of young boys, who also peruse porn sites, with mates and fathers of young girls.
    I’m also aware, from personal experience, that Pakistani’s are fond of their mens clubs, secret drinking and drug taking, even in Pakistan. No difference to our society, so why we are afraid to make these cultural/religious differences an issue, I don’t know.
    In my view, this stance of hiding behind the light, never alluding to these problems, the stance of the media and our spokespersons, these are the real supporters of the like’s of the BNP and EDL. Leaving out words, failing to challenge these pseudo religous norms and attitudes are the greatest recruiter to rightwing causes. I have no qualms at trashing catgholic pedophile abuise and, like the irish demand that these holier than thou perverts are punished by the full force of the law, just as other religous perverts. We have to look at those we trust ion a new way and ensure that they are not alone in charge of our children.
    These girls who have been accused highlighted anopther problem, that of the social services and their lack of control over those they purport to look after, vulnerable girls who come from broken homes and already had problems before they got groomed.
    I hate to think what would happen if the story would be one of british white youth and adults approaching pakistani, Afghan, Saudi girls after school, offering sweets, alcohol and a ride in a fast car. Would our media make much of it? What of the ensuing uproar amongst that specific community.
    By not talking and tackling these issues frank and openly, regardless in which society they occure or what cultural code’s it breaks, we are guilty of perpetuating this state of affairs.
    I bet that some of these mens family members, wife’s even, knew of the sexual abuse and benefitted from the proceeds,but said nothing, and to think that these pimps and abusers did this for free is ridiculous.
    Should our culturally frustated, unmarried and longterm sexually frustrated be given a free bothel ticket, regardless of their religous affilliations or where they come from?
    Almost unbearable to read. Their screams still echo.
    .
    Earlier in the week, the tribunal heard the testimonies of three witnesses namely Abbas Abid, Moazzam Begg and Jameelah Hameedi. They related the horrific tortures they had faced during their incarceration. The tribunal also heard two other Statutory Declarations of Iraqi citizen Ali Shalal and Rhuhel Ahmed, a British citizen.
    .
    Testimony showed that Abbas Abid, a 48-year-old chief engineer in the Science and Technology Ministry had his fingernails removed by pliers. Ali Shalal was attached with bare electrical wires and electrocuted and hung from the wall. Moazzam Begg was beaten and put in solitary confinement. Jameelah was almost nude and humiliated, used as a human shield whilst being transported by helicopter. All these witnesses have residual injuries till today.
    .
    These witnesses were taken prisoners and held in prisons in Afghanistan (Bagram), in Iraq (Abu Gharib, Baghdad International Airport) and two of them namely Moazzam Begg and Rhuhel Ahmed were transported to Guantanamo Bay.
    .
    The long range acoustic device, or LRAD, is a high-tech loudhailer capable of causing permanent damage to hearing from a distance of more than 300 metres (984ft).
    .
    How the LRAD device works
    Commissioned and designed after the al-Qaeda attack on the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000, the device’s manufacturer, the American Technology Corporation (ATC), calls the LRAD a “non-lethal weapon” with a wide range of uses.
    The LRAD typifies a new generation of hi-tech weaponry being deployed in conflict zones.
    This from Julie Bindel on the current lack of social care for our youngsters making it easy for sex gangs to prey on them.
    The police’s ignorance of their plights only amplifies this serious fall out of three generations of free for all, at any time, lost souls, easy prey as nobody wants to care. Sorry its the Guardian, I will be punished for it in another life I’m sure.
    GO’D at Leveson tomorrow.
    .
    But Mr Cameron and Mr Osborne, in particular, were desperate to emulate Tony Blair and acquire for the Tories their “own Alastair Campbell”. When Mr Coulson refused to sign a confidentiality clause, Mr Osborne backed down. The revelation also sheds further light on the central role played by the then Shadow Chancellor in pursuing the Blair strategy. Mr Coulson’s appointment is expected to come under scrutiny at Leveson tomorrow when the former cabinet secretary, Lord O’Donnell, gives evidence. Lord O’Donnell oversaw the vetting process for civil servants, including advisers such as Mr Coulson, who was subjected to a lower level of security clearance when he became director of communications at Downing Street in May 2010.
    Mark Golding – Children of Iraq,
    Are you aware of the weird and wonderful skin diseases, on an epidemic scale without any apparent cure for these immunity impaired patients whom effectively are living with incurable illnesses, that is attributed to the DU and other chemicals poured on Iraq for the past decade?
    ,
    There seems to be no indication of this in any of the media, fact that cuurently these diseases are found in Kuwait, and other adjacent countries still has not made it a media matter, is a further testament to the collusion of silence.
