Suspects hold up petrol station about an hour north of Paris but injure no-one. Head back towards Paris. Seven arrested some “known to the security services”. Note one of the named suspects (either Said or Cherif Kouachi) was stupid enough to leave his identity card behind in the getaway car. We may wonder why individuals putting so much effort into hiding their identity would carry a card, let alone leave it behind in the car? It may well be genuine but we would be wise to remember how the identity card of Satam Al Suqami survived the 9/11 inferno. We might also remember how two brothers (Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev) were immediately identified and pursued following the Boston bombing despite convincing evidence both were quite innocent of the event, and in fact were set up to transfer responsibility from the true perpetrators that have remained unidentified. This was more than half a century of the famous case of Lee Harvey Oswald who is now generally recognised as being innocent of the Kennedy assassination. We also in the French case replicate police officers being shot dead and close earlier contacts with the security services. It will be remembered that co-incidentally, both in the 7/7 and Woolwich outrages, the claimed perpetrators were known to MI5/6. None of these facts mean the the French case is not as described but anyone with any knowledge or experience of these things, not least those that have followed the Chevaline case, would be wise to be wary. One final rather strange detail as noted earlier, the murderers were said to have spoken in “bad French” suggesting a degree of non-fluency/familiarity with the language, yet the two named suspects (the third handed himself in and has not been charged!) were it is reported born and brought up in France, so are likely to speak perfect French.

The following excerpts are taken from today’s Huffington Post:

“There were reports overnight that a third suspect had handed himself into police. Hamyd Mourad, 18, apparently surrendered after hearing his name on the news in connection with the attack, a judicial official said, though classmates later said Mourad was at the lycee in Charleville-Mezieres during the attack. Le Monde reported he had not been arrested.”

“French TV station BFMTV reported that police found an ID CARD OF ONE OF THE TWO SUSPECTS currently at large, in the abandoned getaway car. “It was their only mistake,” Dominique Rizet, BFMTV’s police and justice consultant told CNN.”

“Cherif Kouachi, had a history of funneling jihadi fighters to Iraq and a terrorism conviction from 2008. Kouachi, now 32, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after being convicted of terrorism charges in 2008 for helping funnel fighters to Iraq’s insurgency. He and his brother, Said, should be considered “armed and dangerous,” French police said in a bulletin early Thursday, appealing for witnesses after a search in the city of Reims, in French Champagne country.”

The British angle is rather intriguing also. It was not long ago in a well advertised Home Office statement, the country was placed on the HIGHEST level of alert for a domestic terrorist outrage. (“In August Theresa May, the Home Secretary, announced the national threat level had increased from “substantial” to “severe”, meaning a terrorist attack is “highly likely”. In early October the police were put on special alert of possible attack.http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/uk-terror-threat-police-put-on-special-terror-alert-for-their-own-safety-9788497.html)
As luck, fate or design would have it, nothing happily appears to have come of it yet in the midst of what is claimed to be an outrageous “Al Qaeda attack” in Paris, Theresa May on behalf of the British Government takes a much more relaxed approach saying there is no indication of any risk to Britain. It seems very strange that if this is an Al Qaeda inspired attack they would not have simultaeous multiple targets in a number of European centres particularly including Britain as a main player in the Middle East and N Africa? The Telegraph quotes the Head of MI5 Andrew Parker as follows:

” The Director General of the Security Service, said he had spoken personally with his French counterpart and had offered his agency’s full support.
MI5 officers are also closely monitoring their own extremist suspects in case any are inspired to copy the French atrocities, it is understood.
Security has been tightened at British ports and at UK passport control posts in France in response to the Paris terror attack, Downing Street said this morning.
Mr Parker will reference the Paris outrage in a long-planned and wide-ranging speech later.
In it, he will say: “It is too early for us to come to judgements about the precise details or origins of the attack but it is a terrible reminder of the intentions of those who wish us harm.
“As you would expect, we are offering our French colleagues our full support as they respond.”

It would be nice to know how within a period of about six months the government can take the view that an attack is imminent, but when one takes place only a couple of hours from London by train, we are perfectly safe? Obviously national security is a very inexact science.

Another little interesting aside, you will note the role BMFTV above. They report the discovered identy card. BMFTV has taken a high profile in the Chevaline case you will remember being (I think) the first to announce Moulier was hit first and later was castigated by EM for publishing photographs of the scene:

“” The broadcast media by a television with a number of images clearly from the survey, it makes me angry, it makes us angry, it makes us sad . ” These are the words of Eric Maillaud, prosecutor Annecy, responsible for the killing of Chevaline at its press conference on February mercredi19. They are addressed, without naming it, BFM TV. Maillaud and added: ” It has deeply shocked family members of victims, including this picture where we see the body of the cyclist certainly lengthened the blurred face, which can be guessed through the windshield body Saad al-Hilli “(shot with his wife, his stepmother and French cyclist Sylvain Mollier – considered by investigators as a collateral victim, Ed). Shocked, Maillaud goes even further: “I think the word ethics is still in the dictionary There I think the red lines not to exceed This will, in time, a survey and study.. the possibility of criminal prosecution “then denouncing “attitudes “which he considers” absolutely outrageous “. Moreover, the prosecutor held a media warn against hasty conclusions stating that the “massacre Chavaline was not understood . ” http://www.arretsurimages.net/breves/2014-02-19/Chevaline-le-procureur-recadre-BFM-TV-id16950

They are to be prosecuted for doing so:

“BFMTV publishing directors and the Parisian and journalist Dominique Rizet be judged correctional Annecy to broadcast pictures of the scene of the crime of the killing of Chevaline, said Friday the prosecutor told AFP.

Both newspapers and journalist are subpoenaed Friday, February 27, 2015 at 14:00 in the Criminal Court of Annecy for helping to violate the confidentiality of investigations, affect the integrity of a corpse and reproduction of circumstances of a crime.
These proceedings follow the broadcast by BFMTV in February of pictures, taken by Le Parisien, showing for an entire family before the shooting , and the other two scenes from the shooting of crime horse.
A photograph taken by a helicopter of the gendarmerie, BMW showed the victims and the cyclist’s body lying on the ground, shot several times. Another picture of the car was taken at breast height.
These photos were “deeply shocked family members of the victims”, said the prosecutor of Annecy, Eric Maillaud shortly after broadcast, denouncing “attitudes (…) perfectly scandalous.”
A complaint was filed by lawyers for the family of Sylvain Mollier, the French cyclist killed in this quadruple murder. ” http://www.leparisien.fr/grenoble-38000/bfmtv-et-le-parisien-cites-en-correctionnelle-pour-la-diffusion-de-photos-de-la-tuerie-de-chevaline-05-12-2014-4350575.php#xtref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.co.uk%2F

Looks like they either have some good inside contacts (the ground photos could only have been taken by authorised personnel on scene) or are used as an outlet for information the police/security services want to get out into the public domain.

  • Tim Veater

Of course in the midst of Maillaud’s “anger and sadness” for infringing the privacy of the victims, he made no reference to how the photographs could be reconciled with his reported interpretation of events, with which they were diametrically opposed!

  • michael norton

Eric Maillaud has kept his trap shut lately.
about time he came up with something interesting, seeing as how he has a lot of Frenchmen and Englishmen assisting him?

  • NotForgettingFrenchBashing

The Charlie Hebdo attackers spoke “perfect French” (contrary to some silly reports), not surprisingly since they are French-born and French-raised. Who cares if they travelled to Yemen or elsewhere, there French, it’s the only thing that matters!!!

  • michael norton

That idiot Hollande wants to get a grip, his country is falling down around his ears.
If he does not soon get a grip,
the Front National woman will become President of France.
These events could bring down the present French Government & president.

  • michael norton

    That Idiot Hollande
is going to have trouble expecting his countrymen to agree that these lone wolf attacks are not linked.
About 8 lone wolf attacks in the last fortnight.

    Quote RT
“The younger brother Cherif was convicted of terrorism charges in 2008 and was sentenced to three years in prison for his links to a network sending jihadists to fight US forces in Iraq.

Said travelled to Yemen in 2011 and was trained by an Al-Qaeda’s affiliate there before returning to France, a senior American official said on Thursday, according to the New York Times.

He reportedly spent “a few months” training in small arms combat, marksmanship and other skills. Both French and US officials were aware that the Kouachi had trained in Yemen.

However, due to stretched resources, French security services had stopped watching them because there are too many suspected jihadists in France to keep track of.

This is said to put further pressure on French authorities to explain how the brothers were able to carry out the terrorist attacks while French intelligence services were aware of their terrorist activities.”

I can see a pattern with “The Slaughter of the Horses Incident”

    UTTER INCOMPETENCE

  • James

    Result !

Well done the French. Hope they died a really bad death (but likely brief).

Fingers crossed all hostages are safe.

Maybe they’ll drag there bodies through the streets…. like they do in the Yemen.

  • michael norton

Hostages have reportedly been taken in a jewellery store in Montpellier, Southern France.
The new incident is being reported shortly after hostages were freed and Charlie Hebdo suspects killed in Northern France.

  • michael norton

All suspects in the bombing of Charlie Hebdo and the hostage kosher supermarket Porte de Vincennes however not yet been apprehended. This situation raises the concern of members antiterorisme interviewed by the BBC.

More than 9,000 workers were mobilized in recent days in the Ile-de-France in the Vigipirate “attack alert” that the government plans to maintain. Additional resources will also be set up, said Saturday Bernard Cazeneuve, “to protect a number of institutions and places of worship.” 500 soldiers will be deployed again in Paris and the Paris region, “two waves.”

    http://www.lefigaro.fr/actualite-france/2015/01/10/01016-20150110ARTFIG00073-les-autorites-mettent-tout-mettre-en-oeuvre-pour-securiser-la-marche-a-paris.php

That is an awful lot of extra forces on alert.

  • NotForgettingFrenchBashing

How alert can the French be? They continue there “woman-hunt” for that Boumedianne wife of the dead terrorist, while cheese left for Syria a week ago. Pathetic.
Police in France is just as bad as in Upper-Savoy. They have not learned one thing since Waterloo.

  • michael norton

It could be that the horrible events over that past week may make it much easier for the French Authorities to shut down the Chevaline Massacre Enquirey.

  • NotForgettingFrenchBashing

Today Francois Holland and David Cameron will march together in the streets of Paris. Will they hold a sign reading ” I AM SAAD”?
The ‘slaughter of the cartoonists’ incident makes the ‘slaughter of the horses’ look like a lame duck.

  • michael norton

    Most amusing, in Savoie, apparently

    http://www.ledauphine.com/savoie/2015/01/10/le-recruteur-du-djihad-etait-un-mauvais-plaisantin
It was finally a joke, but it was in very poor taste. The man who posed as a recruiter of jihad was only a bad joker. The prosecution of Albertville court, no action or prosecution has been given to the case. However, the identity of the joker was communicated to the services in charge of sensitive files.

On 31 December, a few hours to spend in the new year, a man dressed in military, entered in a bar room Fodéré. He began to talk to the young people present in the establishment. “He spoke to them in Arabic. They understood that offered them 50,000 euros if they undertook for jihad, “reported a witness of the scene.

Warned the gendarmes of the brigade of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne calling out quickly so the recruiter called jihad. Formally recognized by young people, he was placed in custody, until the gendarmes inform and dig the profile of the young man. After several investigations, it was left in the wild. Investigators and prosecutor of that person just looking to make a joke …

    Very interesting Tim.

EDITOR’S NOTE: It is not yet known to 21WIRE exactly how the fatal gun shot occurred, but if any other past political and high-profile ‘suicided’ cases are anything to go by, authorities will claim that this victim either shot himself in the back of the head, with his non-shooting hand. In addition, if that were the case, there would also be a lack of gun powder burns on the hands according to the autopsy.
