The mainstream media for the most part has moved on. But there are a few more gleanings to be had, of perhaps the most interesting comes from the Daily Mirror, which labels al-Hilli an extremist on the grounds that he was against the war in Iraq, disapproved of the behaviour of Israel and had doubts over 9/11 – which makes a great deal of the population “extremist”. But the Mirror has the only mainstream mention I can find of the possibility that Mossad carried out the killings. Given Mr al-Hilli’s profession, the fact he is a Shia, the fact he had visited Iran, and the fact that Israel heas been assassinating scientists connected to Iran’s nuclear programme, this has to be a possibility. There are of course other possibilities, but to ignore that one is ludicrous.
Which leads me to the argument of Daily Mail crime reporter, Stephen Wright, that the French police should concentrate on the idea that this was a killing by a random Alpine madman or racist bigot. Perfectly possible, of course, and the anti-Muslim killings in Marseille might be as much a precedent as Mossad killings of scientists. But why the lone madman idea should be the preferred investigation, Mr Wright does not explain. What I did find interesting from a man who has visited many crime scenes are his repeated insinuations that the French authorities are not really trying very hard to find who the killers were, for example:
the crime scene would have been sealed off for a minimum of seven to ten days, to allow detailed forensic searches for DNA, fibres, tyre marks and shoe prints to take place.
Nearby bushes and vegetation would have been searched for any discarded food and cigarette butts left by the killer, not to mention the murder weapon.
But from what I saw at the end of last week, no such searches had taken place and potentially vital evidence could have been missed. House to house inquiries in the local area had yet to be completed and police had not made specific public appeals for information about the crime. No reward had been put up for information about the shootings.
Behind the scenes, what other short cuts have been taken? Have police seized data identifying all mobile phones being used in the vicinity of the murders that day?
The idea that the French authorities – who are quite as capable as any other of solving cases – are not really trying very hard is an interesting one.
Which leads me to this part of a remarkable article from the Daily Telegraph, which if true points us back towards a hit squad and discounts the ides that there was only one gun:
Claims that only one gun was used to kill everybody is likely to be disproved by full ballistics test results which are out in October.
While the 25 spent bullet cartridges found at the scene are all of the same kind, they could in fact have come from a number of weapons of the same make.
This throws up the possibility of a well-equipped, highly-trained gang circling the car and then opening fire.
Both children were left alive by the killers, who had clinically pumped bullets into everybody else, including five into Mr Mollier.
Zainab was found staggering around outside the car by Brett Martin, a British former RAF serviceman who cycled by moments after the attack, but he saw nobody except the schoolgirl.
Her sister, Zeena, was found unscathed and hiding in the car eight hours later.
Both sisters are now back in Britain, and are believed to have been reunited at a secret location near London.
There are of course a number of hit squad options, both governmental and private, which might well involve iraqi or Iranian interests – on both of which the mainstream media have been very happy to speculate while almost unanimously ignoring Israel.
But what interests me is why the Daily Telegraph choose, in the face of all the evidence, to minimise the horrific nature of the attack by stating that “Both children were left alive by the killers”? Zainab was not left alive by design, she was shot in the chest and her skull was stove in, which presumably was a pretty serious attempt to kill a seven year-old child. The other girl might very well have succeeded in hiding from the killers under her mother’s skirts, as she hid from the first rescuers, and then for eight hours from the police.
The Telegraph article claims to be informed by sources close to the investigation. So they believe it was a group of people, and feel motivated to absolve those people from child-killing. Now what could the Daily Telegraph be thinking?
Thanks Bluebird
24 Feb, 2014 – 1:38 pm for that. I hadn’t forgotten our earlier discussion but sometimes these things are worth revisiting for possible developments and/or new contributions. It appears then that although spotted with wife in police van on the 22.9.12 – ie less than 3 wks following Chevaline – he hasn’t been seen since and the police deny all knowledge? Am I correct on that? This is most strange, irregular and ominous for him of course. At the time I raised the possibility that if related, how this might impinge on Eric Maillaud from a psychological point of view, by implication/taint or even duress to comply. Don’t you find it strange, like so much in this case, that the coincidences of time, location, background and name have not been followed up by local press in a position to know? Historically I believe it was stated by SAH that he had discovered very “explosive” information. I feel pretty sure the explanation for the meeting was information rather than material given the limitations of a cyclist although the information would very likely be in the form of a “memory stick”. The information transfer had to be either SM -> SAH or vice versa, or to a third party. It’s significant that WBM checked his pockets. Why in the hell would a total stranger, afraid apparently of getting shot himself, do that? At the same time, WBM is the only non-victim to be said to have “bloody hands” (by PD/B not initially but subsequently) despite WBM saying he was wearing cycling gloves. No mention was made of blood stained clothes, which if the recent photo of the dead SM is anything to go by, dragged by the upper body, could not have been done without contamination.

In november 2012, a belgian friend of stan maillaud did report that he saw him alive. No new report since then.

Re above:
Should read november 2012 !
I am trying to understand if the events in Corsica following the Chevaline affair are in any way related.
Here we have a special ops officer of the GIGN stationed in the sleepy mountains of the Haute-Savoie. The officer played a key role in “The Assault” of an Air France plane.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_France_Flight_8969
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_assault/
He departs his Haute-Savoie post in 2011. Curiously, 2011 marks the arrival in the area of Michael and Linda Mastro, international elder-fugitives with a conspicuous lifestyle that includes an American vehicle, fancy rental accommodations, baggies of expensive jewelry and lap dogs with impolite urination habits. Despite standing out like a sore thumb in the little villages of the rustic Haute-Savoie, it takes some time for the American authorities to track them down.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Mastro
The GIGN officer in charge of Haute-Savoie appeared highly overqualified. He had been in charge of the Albertville Olympics security in 1992. One of his duties seems to have been supervising a police officer named Eric Devouassoux, whose was a glorified (and allegedly cranky) crossing guard for school children and issuer of parking tickets to villagers in Menthon-Saint-Bernard. He also earned a silver medal as a military reservist. He is said to be a trained marksman in his military role:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2561919/Man-arrested-France-connection-murder-British-family-French-Alps.html
Why a trained marksman would be put in charge of helping children cross the quiet streets of Menthon-Saint-Bernard is not clear.
The events at Chevaline unfold on September 5, 2012. Among the dead is Sylvain Mollier, an area resident and metalworker at the AREVA subsidiary plant in nearby Ugine. British tourists Saad al-Hilli, his wife and mother-in-law are apparently killed in the incident. The al-Hilli children survive and are relocated back to the U.K., where they remain at an undisclosed location. The al-Hilli family has ties to Iraq.
Five days after Chevaline, we learn of the Corsica supermarket bombings.
http://www.france24.com/en/20120910-france-wave-supermarkets-bombings-hits-corsica/
Both Chevaline and Corsica are tourist areas.
October 2012 sees the disbandment of the Ligue savoisienne, a Savoyard separatist political movement led by Patrice Abeille and based in Ugine. Abeille was elected to political office as the representative for the area. The Ligue holds meetings and marches in parades, but does not seem to be particularly virulent. Patrice Abeille dies of “natural causes” on July 20, 2013 and is not discovered until three days later. He was supposed to meet his family for a holiday. News coverage of his death is minimal and does not indicate that anyone doubts the finding of “natural causes”.
http://www.savoie-europe-liberte.org/
Flash forward to 2014. ED, the local police officer from Menthon-Saint-Bernard is taken by police for questioning and later charge with smuggling antique weapons. Police are photographed using metal detectors to search D’s property. Jean-Luc Falcy, a seond area man said to be a friend of D, is also arrested. WWII weapons, ammunition, explosives and detonators are found (see article above).
This is most curious. Was the GIGN concerned about increasing radicalization by the Ligue savoienne, or some of its members? Was Patrice Abeille assassinated? Please feel free to add to this new timeline. Were members of the LS involved in arms trafficking beyond antiques? Is this an international plot involving assassinations of people involved in separatist movements, or the work of a lone wolf?
It gets stranger with each passing day.
@BB and Tim,
I think you’re both slightly missing the point re Solidarité et Progrès.
Strange, as neither of you are stupid.
@Katie: It would make sense to dress up for a visit to a bank manager’s office. It would not make sense to dress up for a walk in the woods and picnic in the rain with small children.
I keep going back to an old question: when were the al-Hillis last seen alive by a reliable witness? I am finding it hard to believe that any of the now-silent witnesses we’ve heard from so far are reliable. We’ve seen questionable “last photo” images, but no video images, or stills from video images. Despite all his trips away from the campground, Saad al-Hilli and his family never managed to visit a store, bank, border crossing, or anywhere else they might have been captured on the ever-present security cameras that are part of modern life.
It appears that I should learn how to read French better:

Q
You refer to Corsica.
That’s not that far from logic simply because Corsica did – like Sardinia – belong to the House of Savoy. Savoiards are Corsicans and other side around.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Sardinia
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_irredentism_in_Savoy
Since the Renaissance the area was united to the Italian Piedmont and had for regional capital the town of Ciamberì(Chambéry). The official language was Italian and was divided administratively in Savoia (Ciamberì), Alta Savoia, Sciablese (Thonon), Fossignì (Bonneville), Genevese (Annecy),Moriana (San Giovanni di Moriana) and Tarantasia (Moutier).
When Italy occupied Savoy in November 1942 these fascist groups claimed that nearly 10,000 Italian Savoyards demanded the unification to Italy, but nothing was done mainly because the King of Italy opposed it.[7]After World War II all the organizations of the Irredentist Savoyards were outlawed by the French authorities of Charles de Gaulle. Most of the remaining Irredentist Savoyards supported in the 1950s and 1960s the development of autonomistic political organizations of Savoy, like the Mouvement Région Savoie (Savoy Regional Movement).

In the current political nightmare in Syria and Ukraine, particularly the Crimea, we shall not forget history and in particular Savoyard history.
The Crimea peninsula (today Ukraine/Russian) did originally belong to the house of Savoye.
They inherited “Kaffa” from Greece. Feodossija (Kaffa) became one of the most important christian trading markets on the silk road. However islam fighters, crimean tartars and turkey did attack Kaffa and the Savoyans had to leave the Crimean peninsula. However, the Savoyans did never forget that the Crimea was “theirs”.
In 1783, Russia conquered the Crimea and beat the Turks.
In 1851 then came the Crimean war ahead. France and Britain did support the Turks to attack the Crimean peninsula. The house of Savoie (kingdom of Sardinia) did support and plan the war since they wanted to get back “their crimean peninsula. For France and for the UK this war was a chance to stop russian imperialism towards Asia and the Arab peninsula and blocking their access to the black sea.
Interesting enough, the coalition did fight the Russians during the Crimean war in
1) Crimean peninsula
2) Iran and Armenia
3) Syria (!!)
4) Moldova
5) on the Balkan
The crimean war did end with the peace of Paris.
Do you see any coincidence with the current coalitions and with current war zones?
What will happen with the Crimea next?
The Savoyard nationalists havent forgotten that the crimean peninsula is “theirs”.
(That was just an excursion into history).
Q. Yes !
Another odd thing, apart from the fact we were ‘told ‘ they were dressed in smart clothes that day…. well also remember the four year old ‘hiding under mothers clothes’ …. we assumed it would be a burka, but looking at that second photo,no way would that size child be able to hide under a normal skirt…which Igbal is seen wearing .
Frankly I doubt she ever wore a Burka on holiday or in England, none of those visiting the house with flowers did.
Another discrepancy.
I can’t decide whether the French are deliberately lying or whether they are just incompetent or both, I usually call them slapdash, meaning they go through the motions without thought.
This programme that for some reason isn’t listed in Radio Times web page, gives an interesting little insight into Britain/Iran relations, rather reminiscent of how we dealt with Libya – prepared to sacrifice individuals to curry favour. The co-operation of course is in stark contrast to public pronouncements. The subject of the programme it is alleged was betrayed to the Iranians in two ways: by transferring all his personal files from the Home Office to Iranian government agencies and by revealing his location in Dubai for Iran to kidnap and later kill him. He also was fearful that his life was in danger. Maybe not directly relevant but not without its resonnances.
Kidnapped: Betrayed by Britain? – Panorama
Jane Corbin investigates the disappearance of a British businessman in Dubai, raising questions over whether the British authorities provided personal information about him to a hard-line Iranian regime accused of human rights abuses. Now the UK government stands accused of ignoring warnings that such actions would pose a risk to his life

24 Feb, 2014 – 2:37 pm . Unfortunately I only have rudimentary French and I can’t copy and translate it. It’s marked “Top Secret”. Anything worth reporting? Is Stan Maillaud still in police custody or in hiding?
Good point Q
24 Feb, 2014 – 3:37 pm. Your observation about lack of images has to considered in parallel with the significant fact that it took until January THIS YEAR for a facial image of SM to appear and then a very old one (about 20 yrs ago) and now two images of him purportedly lying dead without facial recognition. Then the delay publishing facial image of Saad’s wife and the fact that NO image HAS EVER BEEN PUBLISHED of mother-in-law Suhaila. In contrast Saad’s was issued from the first. There must be a reason for the reticence to publish beyond the pathetic ones given by EM.
Tim
My french isnt good enough for understanding all the details.
Basically this is a web cast where he speaks to police and gendarmes asking them to assist him in tracking down politicians and wealthy guys connected to pedophilia. This was recorded a few months before he had disappeared.
However, i did not post the clip in regards of the contents but rather to compare his face with the face of Eric Maillaud.
I did copy that jpg for you to read the french original. There they claim that his belgian friend met him alive in november 2012. Since then he is on the hide (if his belgian friend told the truth and wasnt forced to lie).
If you want to read the text of the jpg then i could provide you a google translation if you wish.

I have a couple of questions – with apriori apologies if you people have already discussed aplenty during my prolonged absence:
1. Has there been a discussion here of the “man in a suit” that showed up at Saad’s camp and had, what was described as a “heated” discussion with him the night before the killings? this information I believe was revealed in the Panorama report (to which I have no link – if anyone does, I’d appreciate).
2. Also in the panorama program (I believe) there were allusions to some “missing passports”. I saw that comment on MZT. Is that true and does anyone recollect what the source for that was?
An aside: any consensus here (or if not consensus then contention) as to the possible location of that elusive X5 at the time seen by the ONF?
Thanks in advance if anyone could direct me to where the relevant discussions took place. It is very difficult to search this blog.
Q
24 Feb, 2014 – 4:43 pm Not very promising for Chevaline is it? Obviously the French are fairly relaxed about random killings. “C’est la vie” said with a Francophile shrug?
“Last October, Corsica’s best-known lawyer, Antoine Sollacaro, was assassinated as he drove to work. Two gunmen on a motorbike followed the 63-year-old into a petrol station and shot him several times.
His killers have still not been found, and the statistics suggest they never will. Since 2007 there have been 105 assassinations of which less than 10% have resulted in a conviction.
Anna-Maria Sollacaro
Anna-Maria Sollacaro fears her father’s case will simply gather dust
Sollacaro’s daughter, Anna-Maria, believes that the state’s failure to successfully prosecute the culprits of these killings has led to a culture of impunity on the island.
“For an assassin to kill someone one morning at nine o’clock at a petrol station in front of CCTV cameras, it takes real nerve. They are taking a risk,” she says.
“It makes you wonder if, sometimes, they are helped.”
one more comment:
I went back again to look through a couple of the last MZT forums – specifically #17 and #15 (#16 seems to be somehow missing but could just be a counting error). Takes a while just to scroll through, I must say (even if I hop over james’ comments).
There were lots of interesting, if rather circular discussions about the various locations and arrival times of the parties – ONF1, ONF2, MC, WBM etc. All in all the posters there seemed to converge on the likelihood that the martinet location was “cased” in advance by one or more of the vehicles. Even Marilyn seemed in one post to warm up to the idea of a pre-arranged meeting – at least for SAH – there was just no other way to account for the timings and the goings-on. Several people pointed out the possibility that SAH did pass the builders at around 3PM, perhaps went up to the martinet, but being too early came back down, went to Doussard for “pictures”, then went up again arriving just in time to get him + family killed. Timing is still tight, of course, to get there from “3:15Pm” picture-time, which is why people (those left) at MZT – just as people here – doubted the veracity of the original time stamp, as given out by the police (those discussions took place back in October-November. No further forum talk after that as Marilyn closed it down – permanently she said).
One more note: I took note of max’s final postings there. He seemed exasperated, following the panorama report and the request for info on the X5 being sighted by ONF1. he did look in some detail into where the sighting took place and concluded that the X5 and WBM would have to be nearly coincident, following comparison with Alex’s trip. That threw a major monkey-wrench into all previous speculations and timelines, and he seemed to have concluded that there’s no way the french police and/or WBM would not be either lying or deliberately withholding information. Since the WBM testimony was one of the few anchors for the timeline of the shootings, once key parts of his testimony are in doubt, there’s really not enough to put together a plausible scenario about who was where, when. Having noticed the giant gaps, and come to doubt much of the previous revelations, I think (pure speculation here on my part) he became disenchanted with the idea of putting a whole lot more effort into building up scenarios and timelines. And I can’t blame him either. I do believe (based on my ever present profiling) that he was honest in his logical recreations, whether I agreed with all his conclusions or not. Perhaps he did come to suspect an underlying agenda behind the forum, perhaps not. But if he did, he’d have a serious cause for disenchantment, given the huge effort he put into his comments, photo improvements and recreations. In that case, my sympathies – I don’t take serious effort lightly, ever.
Just thought I’ll put this out there, in case he ever reads here again, now that the other forum seems to be closed.
I also wish some of those other commenters from MZT – eg, the ones named Steve, Patrick and Partlucid or the previous active ones – Eugene, Lars, Seebee etc – cared to comment here. They all had very valuable comments over a long time, IMO, whether I happen to agree with any one point or not. What I liked in the MZT forums is that they stayed pretty close to the Chevaline case, which complements this forum rather well, given the more far ranging discussions here. It’s good to have some people around who pull things to the center, not that I mind the excursions.

24 Feb, 2014 – 10:28 pm its really good to see your contributions again. I’m thinking of all those adventures you’ve had since last we heard from you. You and I (at least) shared a theory regarding British/French true attitudes rather than the public face. We came to it independently I believe and for some reason it caused considerable disquiet on MZT at least. Now you raise the Panorama programme which is interesting, as it I believe was the latest illustration of our idea. I have discussed this at length before but as you have been away will repeat. You may disagree with me but I have never had a problem with that if the objection is rational and polite, as you always are. (Apologies for that little aside directed elsewhere in the past) The Panorama programme came a little after the anniversary joint British/French press conference that was notable only for its uselessness. It was quite obviously not intended either to give or seek information to or from the public. If ever there was convincing evidence of a fraudulent enquiry, this was it. Absolutely no attempt was made to clear up or clarify nor any new appeal with family members or otherwise. Perhaps most notable by its absence a DEFINITIVE timeline of people, vehicles and events. Nothing was revealed of the extensive British investigation either mind you. However within days along comes BBC Panorama programme with, amidst all the flannel, some notable insights not previously revealed. A “heated argument” at the camp-site the day before was one but a much more significant one was the alleged ONF employee who really put the “cat among the the pigeons”. His identity wasn’t revealed and on camera he appeared only back profile showed. I have to say I found this highly suspect simply because the French would not have allowed it. He had to be a French Government employee and easily identifiable by them. A. they wouldn’t have given permission; B. he would be subject to severe sanctions without it. So I believe it was an actor, and the story seeded by the British for a reason. Although we can’t therefore be sure of the voracity of his story, the French did not contradict it, despite the fact that effectively it dropped both them in general, and Maillaud in particular, into the VERY MESSY proverbial. Why? Because for the very first time (remember EM had always “pooh poohed” any involvement by the ONF and dismissed out of hand any reference to them, this alleged insider put TWO ONF vehicles at the scene at the critical time, and both seeing/meeting Maillaud’S PRINCIPAL …… – THE LONE MOTOR-CYCLIST. Not only does this source confirm the earlier British announced BMW X5, saying he passed him, but says he saw the motor cyclist actually at the layby. Although he didn’t give a time for this, by working backwards from the stated passing time of 3.20 we can work out it was about 3.15. However he then adds that later the second ONF meet head on further up the trail. Now based on the timings this we must presume IS POST-SHOOTING!! He says they interview him even, because he is breaking the law and they are quasi policemen. So this puts Maillaud on the spot and begs the question not only why he has misled the public/with-held vital information, but also forces his hand with regard to a photo-fit/description. Then the final twist that has never been explained, but that the revelations inevitably pose – they ESCORTED HIM DOWN from the mountain. Therefore they MUST have passed the scene of the massacre! This is amazing and cannot be logically explained. I will leave you to work out all the practical implications. It took Maillaud a further three weeks to produce the photo fit which itself is highly suspicious as with his feeble excuse why it was withheld for over a year and the fact it appears to be quite unrepresentative of standard French photo-fit practice. So was this British sourced information accurate or was it just intended to embarrass them further and put them on the spot? If the former, it can only implicate EM in cover-up and implicate the ONF at least in involvement, possibly much worse. As I have postulated long ago, if you were going to have a kidon type operation, what better cover than an ONF vehicle, though this of course is venturing into the realms of pure speculation and fantasy!
As to passports we have been told there were passports on the footwell of the BMW AND that Saad and Iqbals British passports were missing and never recovered I believe. The significance of this has never been unravelled as far as I am aware.
It’s bad enough when you are dealing with the machinations of just one secret organisation in one country. Here we are dealing with multiples, all with their own agendas and perverse objectives. Like an unaccountable state within a state, treating the rest of us as mere observers, to whom no explanations are due, no accountability necessary, presumably because normal rules do not apply, and no limits are imposed, up to and including murder. It is a chilling reminder as to the fragility of our systems to protect us from random acts of violence and the consequent vulnerability we all share.
