Syria and Diplomacy 2917

The problem with the Geneva Communique from the first Geneva round on Syria is that the government of Syria never subscribed to it.  It was jointly chaired by the League of Arab States for Syria, whatever that may mean.  Another problem is that it is, as so many diplomatic documents are, highly ambiguous.  It plainly advocates a power sharing executive formed by some of the current government plus the opposition to oversee a transition to democracy.  But it does not state which elements of the current government, and it does not mention which elements of the opposition, nor does it make plain if President Assad himself is eligible to be part of, or to head, the power-sharing executive, and whether he is eligible to be a candidate in future democratic elections.

Doubtless the British, for example, would argue that the term transition implies that he will go.  The Russians will argue there is no such implication and the text does not exclude anybody from the process.  Doubtless also diplomats on all sides were fully aware of these differing interpretations and the ambiguity is quite deliberate to enable an agreed text. I would say that the text tends much more to the “western” side, and that this reflects the apparently weak military position of the Assad regime at that time and the then extant threat of western military intervention.  There has been a radical shift in those factors against the western side in the interim. Expect Russian interpretations now to get more hardline.

Given the extreme ambiguity of the text, Iran has, as it frequently does, shot itself in the foot diplomatically by refusing to accept the communique as the basis of talks and thus getting excluded from Geneva.  Iran should have accepted the communique, and then at Geneva issued its own interpretation of it.

But that is a minor point.  The farcical thing about the Geneva conference is that it is attempting to promote into power-sharing in Syria “opposition” members who have no democratic credentials and represent a scarcely significant portion of those actually fighting the Assad regime in Syria.  What the West are trying to achieve is what the CIA and Mossad have now achieved in Egypt; replacing the head of the Mubarak regime while keeping all its power structures in place. The West don’t really want democracy in Syria, they just want a less pro-Russian leader of the power structures.

The inability of the British left to understand the Middle East is pathetic.  I recall arguing with commenters on this blog who supported the overthrow of the elected President of Egypt Morsi on the grounds that his overthrow was supporting secularism, judicial independence (missing the entirely obvious fact the Egyptian judiciary are almost all puppets of the military) and would lead to a left wing revolutionary outcome.  Similarly the demonstrations against Erdogan in Istanbul, orchestrated by very similar pro-military forces to those now in charge in Egypt, were also hailed by commenters here.  The word “secularist” seems to obviate all sins when it comes to the Middle East.

Qatar will be present at Geneva, and Qatar has just launched a pre-emptive media offensive by launching a dossier on torture and murder of detainees by the Assad regime, which is being given first headline treatment by the BBC all morning

There would be a good dossier to be issued on torture in detention in Qatar, and the lives of slave workers there, but that is another question.

I do not doubt at all that atrocities have been committed and are being committed by the Assad regime.  It is a very unpleasant regime indeed.  The fact that atrocities are also being committed by various rebel groups does not make Syrian government atrocities any better.

But whether 11,000 people really were murdered in a single detainee camp I am unsure.  What I do know is that the BBC presentation of today’s report has been a disgrace.  The report was commissioned by the government of Qatar who commissioned Carter Ruck to do it.  Both those organisations are infamous suppressors of free speech.  What is reprehensible is that the BBC are presenting the report as though it were produced by neutral experts, whereas the opposite is the case.  It is produced not by anti torture campaigners or by human rights activists, but by lawyers who are doing it purely and simply because they are being paid to do it.

The BBC are showing enormous deference to Sir Desmond De Silva, who is introduced as a former UN war crimes prosecutor.  He is indeed that, but it is not the capacity in which he is now acting.  He is acting as a barrister in private practice.  Before he was a UN prosecutor, he was for decades a criminal defence lawyer and has defended many murderers.  He has since acted to suppress the truth being published about many celebrities, including John Terry.

If the Assad regime and not the government of Qatar had instructed him and paid him, he would now be on our screens arguing the opposite case to that he is putting.  That is his job.  He probably regards that as not reprehensible.  What is reprehensible is that the BBC do not make it plain, but introduce him as a UN war crimes prosecutor as though he were acting in that capacity or out of concern for human rights.  I can find no evidence of his having an especial love for human rights in the abstract, when he is not being paid for it.  He produced an official UK government report into the murder of Pat Finucane, a murder organised by British authorities, which Pat Finucane’s widow described as a “sham”.  He was also put in charge of quietly sweeping the Israeli murders on the Gaza flotilla under the carpet at the UN.

The question any decent journalist should be asking him is “Sir Desmond De Silva, how much did the government of Qatar pay you for your part in preparing this report?  How much did it pay the other experts?  Does your fee from the Government of Qatar include this TV interview, or are you charging separately for your time in giving this interview?  In short how much are you being paid to say this?”

That is what any decent journalist would ask.  Which is why you will never hear those questions on the BBC.

    Mary scrawls:

“Agent Cameron chose the Limp Ic park to issues his anti Scottish independence speech. I believe he was speaking in the velodrome so there was a strange echo to his words. Worthy of a Third Reich rally.”

Not quite worthy of a “Third Reich rally”, Mary. As you have no doubt noticed, Scotland is having a vote on independence.

  • Anon

Sorry, John, but I can’t take your call for freedom of information seriously when you have previously called for total left-wing domination of the media.

  • Mary

Which Anon is that? Is it the ESLO Anon, the Anon Anon, or a new Anon? Shall be all be Anons?

Can Anon not read? Nevermind @ 2.30pm

‘Today’s speech of Cameron Mary was talking about, his clarion call to all, mobilising the voices of this country as an accomplishment, his rhetoric, to contact relatives and friends and urge them to vote against.

If you load a shotgun and discharge both barrels into your feet you could not have done more harm to your campaign, what a pratt.

It will only encourage me to ring my relatives and urge them to vote for Independence and I can influence/argue with, if not sway, six votes, shall do my damnest, dear David.

    Unless the rights of normal scottish people are worse after Independence there is no reason to vote against.;

    I concur.

A friend writes: ‘I can just imagine the Scots response to this cringe worthy ‘red, white & blue’ crap; rhymes with yuck and ends in off.’

PS We are all very well aware that there is a referendum this year thank you. See Craig’s posts –

Israeli occupation raid and evict Palestinians from Ein Hijleh
    Friday 7, February 2014

Hundreds of Israeli forces have raided Ein Hijleh village in the Jordan Valley and evicted all its residents violently around 1:30 am and declared the village a closed military zone. And it is estimated that between 200-250 Palestinians were in the village at the time of eviction.

35 Palestinians were injured and taken to Jericho hospital after the eviction. At the time of the raid Israeli forces fired large amounts of sound bombs to scatter the crowd that gather at the center of the village while many women and children were automatically evicted from homes and tents where they were asleep.

Israeli forces have attacked the residents of Ein Hijleh by beating them up, kicking them and pushing them to the ground and into the fire.

The residents of the village were transferred after the eviction with Israeli occupation military buses while being humiliated and mocked by the soldiers on the bus. The residents of Ein Hijleh where transferred to the entrance of Jericho and were received by Palestinian security forces and taken to the center of Jericho city.

Israeli forces have also attacked journalists and medical teams in the village at the time of eviction including a cameraman from Palestine TV who was pushed from one of the rooftops to the ground and one of the medics from the medical relief team was hit with a riffle on his chest.

Several Palestinians were arrested at the time of eviction and were later released at the entrance of Jericho.

The activist from the popular struggle committee in AlMasara Mahmoud Zawahreh said that the activists have managed to revive the village and although they were evicted from Ein Hijleh the Israeli occupation failed to evict the village and the great work achieved from the hearts and minds of Ein Hijleh residents.

Activist from the popular struggle from Aida refugee camp in Bethlehem Monther Amira said that the eviction will not end the work of the activists in the Jordan Valley, he added “we will continue with our campaign Melh AlArd (Salt of the Earth), and the revival of the village was only the start to our work in the Jordan Valley, we will continue our work and we will remain to be the salt to this earth working against Israeli policies in all of Palestinian lands especially against the Judaization and annexation of the Jordan Valley.

List of the injuries taken from Jericho hospital follows. The ages of the 38 admitted to hospital range from 17 – 54

Victoria Nuland takes disdain of the goyim to the next level!! There is no international law anymore, “fuck the EU”, all that is required is a high level stooge to “midwife” their plans to fruition in Ukraine. What UN? And we have the sayanim chorus at this blog in full song about democracy and international law?!! Sheesh, let alone being fired, the yiddish bitch has not even been reprimanded?, incredible?!

30 hotels, a brandnew railwaystation, 200 km of new track, a ski resort, stadia that have a second use, almost all of them with the ability to dismantle them afterwards, a new airport, a power station and more than one gigantic ski lift, a new media/shopping centre, a massive update to sewerage systems, etc. etc.

The fact is that they have achieved to turn a sleepy backward town into a bustling international ski resort, with all the bells and whistles why would anyone here follow the shallow paranoia that has been spread in the west, with gloomy ads and dark voices. Why should it be denigrated here when we can’t change much to stop international brands making another big killing there.

It is sad that Cameron and Obama have pooped their trousers and have left US/UK athletes without their support on the opening day, how peace loving, what disgracefully unolympic manners to put on international display.
I suppose the dire state of international financial system is more pressing, the import figures are huge, whilst export figures are low and stagnant, can’t keep up, indeed a large casm has opened, again.

The 164.053999467 kilometres from London to Birmingham is apparently going to cost 42 billion, one single railway that is undermining all other rail projects. How many billions will 30 Hotels in Brighton or Plymouth set you back? and how much for a new train station, St. Pancras? Another cheap point by Anon that does not bare comparesence?

What do Obama and Cameron know about Sochi that nobody else knows? Are they scared of something, was it something they both saw in their tea leaves, something really tangible?

Or was it something they’d planned to do, wreck the Olympic effort with inuendo, or is it something ol Bandar boy is planning to do? some carnage he warned them of?

  • Resident Dissident

    Nevermind

Sochi was never a sleepy backward town – if you wish to do propaganda for Putin, I’m sure there people around who can help you with the basic facts.

Why do you think a rhythmic gymnast (i.e. not the mainstream stiff) with one gold and one bronze in the Summer Olympics was lighting the flame at the Winter Olympics? (biggest laugh I’ve had for a long time)

  • Black jelly

I see Godbole & Co are more miffed about Putins pussy lighting the Olympic flame than the 400 Alawite kids gassed as props for the Ghouta false flag. Or Victoria Nuland “fuck the EU” , we need to “midwife” an overthrow of a legitimately elected Ukrainian Government with an Annan like figure.

There’s a reckoning coming, says John Pilger, not just for Tony Blair and the other war criminals, but for those in the media who covered up the bloodbath.

J.Pilger on the PJ Harvey Radio 4 –

Harvey’s guests caused panic from the moment she proposed the likes of Mark Curtis, a historian rarely heard on the BBC who chronicles the crimes of the British state; the lawyer Phil Shiner and the Guardian journalist Ian Cobain, who reveal how the British kidnap and torture; the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange; and myself.

There were weeks of absurd negotiation at Broadcasting House about ways of “countering” us and whether or not we could be allowed to speak without interruption from Today’s establishment choristers. What this brief insurrection demonstrated was the fear of a reckoning. The crimes of western states like Britain have made accessories of those in the media who suppress or minimise the carnage.

The Faustian pacts that contrived a world war a century ago resonate today across the Middle East and Asia, from Syria to Japan. Then, as now, cover-up was the principal weapon. In 1917 David Lloyd George, the British prime minister, declared: “If people knew the truth, the war would be stopped tomorrow. But of course they don’t know and can’t know.”

On Harvey’s Today programme I referred to a poll conducted by ComRes last year that asked people in Britain how many Iraqis had been killed as a result of the 2003 invasion. A majority said that fewer than 10,000 had been killed: a figure so shockingly low it was a profanity.

I compared this with scientific estimates of “up to a million men, women and children [who] had died in the inferno lit by Britain and the US”. In fact, academic estimates range from less than half a million to more than a million. John Tirman, the principal research scientist at the MIT Centre for International Studies, has examined all the credible estimates; he told me that an average figure “suggests roughly 700,000”. Tirman pointed out that this excluded deaths among the millions of displaced Iraqis, up to 20% of the population.

The day after the Harvey programme, Today “countered” with Toby Dodge of the LSE – a former adviser to General Petraeus, one of the architects of the disasters in both Iraq and Afghanistan – along with Mowaffak al-Rubaie, a former Iraqi “national security adviser” in the occupation regime, and the man who led Saddam Hussein to his lynching.

These BBC-accredited “experts” rubbished, without evidence, the studies and reduced the number of dead by hundreds of thousands. The interviewer, Mishal Husain, offered no challenge to their propaganda. They then “debated” who was responsible. Lloyd George’s dictum held; culpability was diverted.

But for how long? There is no question that the epic crime committed in Iraq has burrowed into the public consciousness. Many recall that “shock and awe” was the extension of a murderous blockade imposed for 13 years by Britain and the US and suppressed by much of the mainstream media, including the BBC. Half a million Iraqi infants died as a result of sanctions, according to Unicef. I watched children dying in hospitals, denied basic painkillers.

Ten years later, in New York, I met the senior British official responsible for these “sanctions”. He is Carne Ross, once known in the UN as “Mr Iraq”. He is now a truth-teller. I read to him a statement he had made to a parliamentary select committee in 2007: “The weight of evidence clearly indicates that sanctions caused massive human suffering among ordinary Iraqis, particularly children. We, the US and UK governments, were the primary engineers and offenders of sanctions and were well aware of the evidence at the time but we largely ignored it and blamed it on the Saddam government … effectively denying the entire population the means to live.”

I said to him: “That’s a shocking admission.”

“Yes, I agree,” he replied. “I feel ashamed about it …” He described how the Foreign Office manipulated a willing media. “We would control access to the foreign secretary as a form of reward to journalists. If they were critical, we would not give them the goodies of trips around the world. We would feed them factoids of sanitised intelligence, or we’d freeze them out.”

In the build-up to the 2003 invasion, according to studies by Cardiff University and Media Tenor, the BBC followed the Blair government’s line and lies, and restricted airtime to those opposing the invasion. When Andrew Gilligan famously presented a dissenting report on Today, he and the director general were crushed.

The truth about the criminal bloodbath in Iraq cannot be “countered” indefinitely. Neither can the truth about our support for the medievalists in Saudi Arabia, the nuclear-armed predators in Israel, the new military fascists in Egypt and the jihadist “liberators” of Syria, whose propaganda is now BBC news. There will be a reckoning – not just for the Blairs, Straws and Campbells, but for those paid to keep the record straight.

    ……..

Fragments here from the US State Department’s new comedy “Desperate Midwives”,

Pyatt: “Yeah, no, I think that’s right. OK. Good. ”

Nuland: “OK. He’s now gotten both Serry and [UN Secretary General] Ban Ki-moon to agree that Serry could come in Monday or Tuesday. So that would be great, I think, to help glue this thing and to have the UN help glue it and, you know, Fuck the EU!”

Laurel: “So let me work on Klitschko and if you can just keep… we want to try to get somebody with an international personality to come out here and help to midwife this thing.”

Last night on the newspaper review on Sky News, they came to an item about a malfunction at Sochi when a ‘snowflake’ failed to transform into the fifth Limp Ic ring.

A James Max said ‘Whoever was responsible for that will get fired’. His fellow reviewer, a Ms Kleeman added ‘Or worse. Good job it’s not North Korea’ implying summary execution I assume. At which they all fell about, including the presenter Mark Longhurst.

Pathetic. Another silly dig at the ‘enemies’ of the USUKIsNATO, Putin’s Russia and Kim Jong-un’s North Korea. The propaganda is puerile, widespread and constant.

    Thanks.
What we should do with these relevations about USUKIS destruction of Iraq is to immediately transfer what they teach us about UKUSIS and the current war in Syria. Politicians are used and abused then hung out to dry. Cameron is deploying hundreds of thousands of (foreigners to Syria) UK troops alongside foreigners to Syria Islamists.

As you have mentioned previously the authoritarian regime in Syria restricted the outbreak of sectarian violence, while UKUSIS have fed it, under the Salafi takfiri ( If you do not obey me I will kill you ) and the Zawahiri ichtilaf/ divide and rule mentality ( If you dare to engage your intellect about what you are doing you are a spy and I will denounce you.

I have not been to Syria but I have visited its neighbours, Jordan and Kurdistan and attended the masajid/ mosques fordaily prayers. What struck me was the determination of the imams to teach the Qur’an after the prayers on a daily basis from its famous texts in order to boost the hearts/iman of the besieged worshippers. This is in stark contrast with Asian sub-continent practice in the UK where tafsir/ explanation of the Qur’an is reserved for special seminars and occasions.

Yet the outflow of the ignorant from the sub-continent Muslims to determine the fate of the knowledgeable Syrians has led to chaos.
Saudi Arabia, although it constantly delivers explanation of the Qur’an in the masajid/ mosques has so completely repressed political dissent that they have a huge addiction problem sex, drugs and alcohol, where intelligent, sensitive and pious hearts and minds have been totally denied the ability to transfer their faith and knowledge into practical action.

The channelling of frustration into violence against other Muslims, frustration caused by the ruthless repression of freedom of speech and religious action, only serves the purposes of UKUSIS. When the newly recruited Saudi Jaysh realise that they have been duped into murder by their leaders for the benefit of UKUSIS, they will turn against them, which is also part of the plan of UKUSIS.

All you have to do to get a Muslim into silly mode is to quote selectively from the holy texts. The Jews and the Christians are extremely well informed about the meanings of their own God-derived scriptures, which they refuse to follow themselves. Hence they are well-versed and – competent to deviate the Muslims into dis-obedience to the truth of their Islamic scriptures.

I have no doubt that ultra-right-wing UKUSIS and Blair’s perversion of faith which UKUSIS have engendered by force in the Muslim counties will prevail over the nationalism of Assad and the socialism of Putin. Not one shred of doubt in my mind about this. But when Allah says ” Oh you who believe, do not take the Jews and the Christians as protectors, indeed they are protectors only of themselves “, I presume it is my duty to follow the commands of Allah, rather than the commands of the pimps of UKUSIS.

It may be the new Youtube sensation, but “Desperate Midwives” hasn’t won over the critics, who are pointing out that it’s just a reworking of a tied old theme.

“Consider who is funding these rebels and protesters, where logistics are coming from. They say “OK, we need an international personality to visit” and there is an international personality. They say “We need a high government official identified by name to bless it” and he does exactly that. There is obvious evidence confirming what is actually going on there. Considering that there have been pamphlets found among the rioters, there are exact replicas that have been used previously in Serbia and in Egypt, offered by the people who are on the pay roll of the US government through various US non-governmental institutions and institutes. Again, it’s not very difficult to piece the picture together.” Nebojsa Malic

    Nuland aka Nudleman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Nuland

is married to Kagan, a founder of the Project for the New American Century http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kagan

Her father is a doctor and a writer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherwin_B._Nuland

‘Sherwin Nuland was a practicing surgeon for 30 years and treated more than 10,000 patients. Now he is an author and speaker on topics no smaller than life and death, our minds, our morality, aging and the human spirit.

His 1995 book How We Die: Reflections on Life’s Final Chapter demythologizes the process of dying. Through stories of real patients and his own family, he examines the seven most common causes of death: old age, cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer’s, accidents, heart disease and stroke, and their effects. The book, one of 10 he has written, won the National Book Award and spent 34 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list. His latest book is The Art of Aging: A Doctor’s Prescription for Well-Being.’

What must he think of his daughter?

This is an interesting piece about him, on his troubled childhood and development, his depression and thoughts and beliefs. It was written when he first visited Israel in 2007. He commends the Israeli medical system but is obviously blinkered on the existence of the Palestinians. They are not mentioned. The usual Jewish exclusivity is displayed.

Us westerners find it extremely difficult to understand the politics of tribalism. We are disconnected from our roots, our close families, our national loyalties and often from our own inner selves.
There is much talk about honour killings in the news and it reflects horribly on Islam because our western minds do not understand the mechanics of tribalism. When a Muslim parent is tyrannically controlling their offspring, they are not thinking about their offsprings’ feelings, honour or chastity. We have heard recently about tribal elders ordering a disobedient female to be gang raped, so it’s obviously nothing to do with chastity.
No honour killing is nothing to do with the honour of a human being. It is to do with inter-family politics, about who has power in tiny rural communities thousands of miles away, about who is going to dominate a village and receive feudal loyalties. Watch any Turkish soap and you will see the Romeos and Juliets swinging from unrequited passion to mental illness through the manipulations of powerful family feuds.
In the same way, us westerners are completely incapable of understanding what is going on in the apartheid of Zionism. Just because there is a pecking order in the global community of Jews, does not mean that there is not an intense, un-pluralistic religious/ethnic exclusivity of non-Jews. Nothing like this exists anywhere else in the world. The Jews ish to retain their ‘chosen’ status two millennia after it was cancelled by their disobedience to their prophet Eesa / Jesus, pbuh.
The purpose of Zionism is to amass Jewish blood/belief, and blood includes all those whose tribal loyalties may be not ethnically Jewish, like Obama. I have seen skull-cap wearing black Jews. The Kashar issue is a complete red herring, because Zionism is not about ethnicity, it is about fealty, feudal incorporation to Jewish ideals. If you don’t get feudalism, you don’t get Zionism at all.
The Zionists wish trace their inclusivity to all available constituency members, including to Afghanistan where they believe lost tribes fled to after the Captivity. From Afghanistan they exported the distortion of Islam called Sufism to Konya in Turkey, to India, and thence all round the world. Included also is the Kurdish descendants of Aramaic Babylon because in effect that population was the epicentre of Judaism from the time of the Captivity, in which they were slaves. Jesus pbuh was talking Aramaic 500 years after the Captivity in Jerusalem.
Other Jews include the emigrants to Europe at the time of the Roman empire. Jews entered Roman Civilisation like a sperm into an ovum, creating the dynasty of the Roman Catholic church which fought for centuries against other competing versions of Christianity in Africa, which followed the teaching of the oneness of Allah. Judaism ran alongside the Muslim conquest of Spain, and later the tribe was adopted and given sanctuary in Holland and under Cromwell the UK and both their colonies.
The purpose of the banking crash has been to re-construct world political control under the financial domination of the Jews. When a US diplomat says ‘fuck the EU’, that means fuck the goyim, we only need to listen to our agents of banking political power. Because Jews control the banking in Russia it becomes incredibly easy swiftly to construct a Russia-friendly deal in which Putin keeps his ties with the Ukraine, while publicly releasing her to Europe. Zionism tracks its members from the protestant countries who gave it shelter from Roman Catholic persecution to the New World or Russia or anywhere else it can use its matrix connection. A matrix is any pattern in which enough components match to ensure a permanent loyalty. If Roman Catholicism gets funny with the Zionists and the connection is lost, the virus moves to a new host, while punishing its former host.
The purpose of the Afghan invasion was to re-configure power in that country to those of Jewish inclusivity while droning out the people of Islamic mentality. Both look the same on the outside, but on the inside they have completely different loyalties. Islam is ethical, pluralistic concerning race, gender, faith and nationality. Obama is zapping them like flies, while handing power over Afghanistan to the mentally pledged seed of Zion. Same in Kurdistan. Same about to happen in Syria and Egypt. Any country that identifies itself with Islam and its intellectual and social freedom, like Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Libya, is crushed.
Just for the record, the biggest joke on earth is the idea that Zionism is the real target behind the war in Syria. Iran is already stuffed by Zionism, already perverted, paid up and prostrate. Syria is the target of Syria. The Jihadists have been lured there by Zionism to destroy Assad, but in the process they want to destroy the Syrian people’s loyalty to Islam and create a new loyalty to Israel. Same old same old colonial manipulation. Boring boring.
Sorry it’s so boring but the events of the last 20 years only make sense to me when seen from the tribal Zionist perspective. If anyone wants to get rich, peaceful production will always beat war destruction.
