One of my oldest and dearest friends has gone public on his support for Scottish Independence. I am greatly cheered by this. More thoughts later.

Mary at 1:17pm links to a site called “The Ugly Truth”, which, according to the blurb, deals with “Zionism, Jewish extremism and a few other nasty items making our world uninhabitable today”
And in case we are in any doubt about what sort of place this is, here’s a selection of charms from the site:

What are you doing reading such a site, Mary, and linking to it here?
“Mark my words…..” Glenn Greenwald.
We are still waiting, Glenn.

Ben-Scot, 2:56 pm; most of us get nasty once we’re involved in animosity. Deliberately (and temporarily) reverse-polarise your filter, and then look through Resident Dissident’s and ESLO’s comments again. You’ll find much reference to decent principles of humanity, connection to the working-class struggle and knowledge of its history, commitment to human rights, opposition to the atrocities of states such as Russia, etc. etc…
Despite what looks to me like deception on behalf of an employer, I’m convinced we have a decent, moral human being here.
Technicolour
Nasty, hate-filled, uncompassionate, selfish, prejudiced, greedy, heartless, nasty, right-wing, soulless, privateer…
This is what you get when you make even the slightest criticism of the NHS.
Just repeat it on a loop when you have the facts pointed out to you!

“The government of Ukraine is not illegal – the previous President fled the country…”
Well we know what would have happened to him if he didn’t flee the country.
Anyway, Sofia Kibo Noh said to you:
“So I’m very keen for you to point me to the part of the Constitution makes the Ukrainian junta legal.”
You replied:
“Sofia
“The legal story is slightly more complex than you might think – the gist of it is here;”

A typical troll non-answer, the like of which your friend Habbabkuk often employs, to waste peoples time by having to search for themselves for something that you should have supplied yourself. (But can’t of course).
You said the current regime in Ukraine is not illegal but you provide nothing to substantiate that claim basically because you can’t.

From a quick check of the DNS etc they seem to be a strange lot – “Best Companies Ltd”. They have FIVE Mail Exchange (MX) servers for that domain. That’s ridiculous overkill and I have to wonder what that’s for. These servers are also on four different subnets and are configured to support encrypted email (STARTTLS) (although that’s become more common recently).
More dark mutterings from Nevermind:
“happen to have a friend who was totally addicted to gambling, to the extend that he lost his friends he borrowed from, his wife and life, because he stole all their money to bet, his children, because he used their savings chasing that illuisive win.”
“Maybe the workplace needs prepping, be more exciting for Anon, spending all this time at the screen, he needs some flowers on his desk and the odd weekend away paddling with friends, cause gambling is the worst addiction there is and can lead to death.
go get some help anon.”

All this because I have a flutter twice a year. I wasn’t wrong when I said you were a miserable lot, was I?
“Anon”, would you go back to commenting as “Habbabkuk” please? It seems unfair to all the other commenters to sit there occupying the “Anon” username, and causing everyone else to have only your Identicon to distinguish you from any other, temporary “Anon”.
Besides, I’d got used to “Habbabkuk”.
Interesting to note that one of Technicolour’s insults is “UKIP supporter”. Now, just off the top of my head:
-Anti Western involvement in Libya
-Anti Western involvement in Syria
-Believe the Syrian gas attack was a false-flag
-Pro Putin
-Believe Russia was right over Ukraine after EU meddling
-anti EU
-Against Iraq War
-Believe the country is being shafted by big business.
I think you’re all a little closer to UKIP than you’d like to admit!
The situation in Ukraine is clearly complex. The change in government was clearly partly legal and partly illegal. The overthrow was clearly supported popularly, yet also clearly supported by Western / corporate interests. The outcome is clearly partly positive, partly negative. Etc. etc. etc…
And yet two distinct camps have developed on this blog, one seemingly wholly in favour, the other apparently wholly opposed.
If we tried to do anything other than politics in this fashion, it would be an utter disaster. You’d take your car to have its tyres changed, and end up having the whole car crushed and replaced. Treatment for a tooth infection would be as damaging as chemotherapy.
Can we really do no better?
Almost forgot:
-Believe Britain is far too subservient to American foreign policy.
AlcAnon/Squonk, 3:24 pm; thanks for that. What is the implication of the mail exchange servers? Are they the same as mail servers? And what could be the significance of them being on four different subnets?
Clark, dear chap, you’re pissing in the wind.
dear oh dear, Anon, you’re not swallowing that whole, are you? Do try chewing a bit first. The Tories promised not to destroy the NHS, remember. While look at the Lib Dems!
In the meantime the list of homophobic racist sexists who populate UKIP, albeit often ‘floods caused by being gay’ laughably, continues, while the millionaire backers and expenses guzzlers have a ball at the poor’s expense.
By the way, if you’re trying to be an advert for Ukip, you’re not really working – too unpleasant and abusive, I’m afraid. With no facts to back you up. Actually, perhaps you are extremely representative – are you?
“And yet two distinct camps have developed on this blog, one seemingly wholly in favour, the other apparently wholly opposed.”
There’s the rub. It’s not a Kierkegaardian Either/Or scenario. We on the Left excoriate Putin’s oppressive roots with alacrity, but the oppo’s don’t meet us in the middle and critique the Brown-shirted mirror-image Oligarchs. A discussion relative to the mixed results of popular uprising in Ukraine, should result in some right-inclined acceptance of the facts. You are preaching to the choir, and enabling the congregation.
Anon, in the northern hemisphere, if one stands with ones back into the wind and extends ones left arm out sideways, it points towards the centre of the depression.
Homophobic, racist, sexist, unpleasant, abusive… the list goes on.
I’m not a UKIP supporter, Technicolour, I just wished to show that there are some surprising similarities between the views espoused by the Eminences and those of Nigel Farage.
I will say one thing in UKIP’s defence, though, and that is that the ‘gay floods’ councillor was quickly expelled from the party and had spent the majority of his career as a mainstream Tory. You’re going to get the odd crackpot in any party.
Clark,
The significance is that they either have money to burn on multiply redundant servers across the group or that they put an enormous importance on receiving email. I am assuming the different subnets are spread across different physical locations for disaster redundancy although I haven’t gone to the bother of looking them all up to check that.
5 MX records in the DNS indicates that any one of these 5 different servers is ably to receive email for the domain. Typically a business will have two MX records – for example both the BBC and BT have two MX records each. Even hotmail.com only has 4 for the entire user-base. gmail.com has 5 the same number as b.co.uk !
Now there are multiple companies in the group but in general you wouldn’t expect them to be configured with so much apparent redundancy/capacity.
Maybe they just have a Mail administrator that likes to throw as many servers as possible at any problem just in case. They are Microsoft based after all 🙂
AlcAnon- don’t understand a word of of it but it sounds terribly boring.
Anon, almost any minority party is closer to the overall will of the electorate than the main three parties. Have you ever tried “Political Compass”?
http://politicalcompass.org/ukparties2010
Please help decrease the wind speed so I can have a piss in peace. Less pressure and less hot air usually helps.
Anon,
Terribly expensive as well. Microsoft licences don’t grow on trees you know!
Clark, I don’t think I’ve seen a more rigged set of questions in my life, purely aimed at producing a left-liberal out of anybody.
AlcAnon/Squonk, 4:26 pm, specifically, is there anything to indicate that Best Companies Ltd are set up to supply multiple IP addresses for maintaining multiple on-line identities such as described here:
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2011/mar/17/us-spy-operation-social-networks
Clark,
I don’t think so. All of the companies in the J H Austin Group seem to be listed on their website along with senior staff names and bio.
I’ve just done a test at mxtoolbox.com and 4 out of 5 of their supposed servers appear to be down. Unless this is weekend maintenance it is possible all but one of their entries in the DNS is just simply wrong in which case it is definitely cockup rather than conspiracy 🙂

What is your point Doug?
Anon, 4:45 pm, you took the test? I’m surprised, and pleased. Where did your result fall? Mostly I wanted you to see the two-axis representation; it literally adds another dimension to politics.
Anon, perhaps, in a pleasant Sunday afternoon-ish mood, you *are* a left libertarian 🙂
