I had fairly well concluded that the most likely cause was a fire disrupting the electrical and control systems, when CNN now say the sharp left turn was pre-programmed 12 minutes before sign off from Malaysian Air Traffic control, which was followed fairly quickly by that left turn.
CNN claim to have this from an US official, from data sent back before the reporting systems went off. It is hard to know what to make of it: obviously there are large economic interests that much prefer blame to lie with the pilots rather than the aircraft. But if it is true then the move was not a response to an emergency. (CNN went on to say the pilot could have programmed in the course change as a contingency in case of an emergency. That made no sense to me at all – does it to anyone else?)
I still find it extremely unlikely that the plane landed or crashed on land I cannot believe it could evade military detection as it flew over a highly militarized region. Somewhere there is debris on the ocean. There have been previous pilot suicides that took the plane with them; but the long detour first seems very strange and I do not believe is precedented. However if the CNN information on pre-programming is correct, and given it was the co-pilot who signed off to air traffic control, it is hard to look beyond the pilots as those responsible for whatever did happen. In fact, on consideration, the most improbable thing is that information CNN are reporting from the US official.

Simon Gunson is determined to dismiss any possibility of MH370 gliding for a portion of its flight. I’d rather ask the pilot and co-pilot of the Gimli Glider about this than Mr. G. I rather think that if a Boeing 767-233 can glide after the loss of both engines, MH370 could have glided, too.

@Q The NOK have enough on their plate right now lets hope they get some news before to long ,once there is some news I expect it to be open season.
There are several independent investigators reporting on the various strands of the Maldives sightings it has not been ignored neither has the Christmas island idea.
I don’t pretend to know what happened just keep an eye on the various strands.
There have been so many good people doing their best to find this plane I must confess I am curious as to what this will change if it turns out to be from MH370.
Victor just posted a link to an interview with Duncan Steel .

That’s on the ICAO logbooks, for sure.
It has been open season on eyewitnesses for more than a year, but can every eyewitness be wrong? That is too hard to believe.

Suggestions forcwreck location are south of the Maldives, north of the current location by 1300 km or debris carried by cyclones from further afield. One mentions that Banda Aceh earthquake and tsunami debris washed up in Reunion in the past.

It’s MH 370.
Meanwhile, an ABC news correspondent from the U.S. says the glider scenario is under consideration by the investigation team. The plane could have glided 125 miles after the fuel ran out, he said on Charlie Rose today, but it would have needed someone alive at the controls to guide it.
