I had fairly well concluded that the most likely cause was a fire disrupting the electrical and control systems, when CNN now say the sharp left turn was pre-programmed 12 minutes before sign off from Malaysian Air Traffic control, which was followed fairly quickly by that left turn.
CNN claim to have this from an US official, from data sent back before the reporting systems went off. It is hard to know what to make of it: obviously there are large economic interests that much prefer blame to lie with the pilots rather than the aircraft. But if it is true then the move was not a response to an emergency. (CNN went on to say the pilot could have programmed in the course change as a contingency in case of an emergency. That made no sense to me at all – does it to anyone else?)
I still find it extremely unlikely that the plane landed or crashed on land I cannot believe it could evade military detection as it flew over a highly militarized region. Somewhere there is debris on the ocean. There have been previous pilot suicides that took the plane with them; but the long detour first seems very strange and I do not believe is precedented. However if the CNN information on pre-programming is correct, and given it was the co-pilot who signed off to air traffic control, it is hard to look beyond the pilots as those responsible for whatever did happen. In fact, on consideration, the most improbable thing is that information CNN are reporting from the US official.
Secondary surveillance (active reflector) radar 1090ES tracking indicated that EI-ETJ reached flight level 340 (10360 metres) over the Sinai before the rapid descent at 6000 feet/minute, only two active pings were received during the descent.
Both Russian TV and LBC mention the pilot requesting a redirect to Cairo due to mechanical problems.
The UK CAA currently has a NOTAM for the Sinai recommending transit only above flight level 240 (7315 metres) due to the presence of rebel forces with MANPAD

The aircraft left Sharm el-Sheikh at 0550LT bound for Saint Petersburg and was cleared to climb to FL350. Some 23 minutes after takeoff, the aircraft entered a steep descent and reached a descent rate of 6,000 feet per minute with a simultaneous reduction of speed before all radar and radio contact were lost at 0613LT. The aircraft crashed and disintegrated in a mountainous region located in the Sinai desert, near Hasna. According to first rescue teams on site, the aircraft broke in two major parts and was destroyed by impact forces and a post crash fire. There is no indication of any survivors among the 224 occupants.
Ukraine, Sinaï : des zones au survol dangereux
“In April, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) published for the first time an information site for hazardous areas. It is for States to airlines or individuals. Among the countries singled out because of the “possibility of an anti-air attack” include Libya, North Korea, Iraq, Somalia and Ukraine.
MH17 tragic precedent
This is also the crash of flight Malaysia Airlines MH17 in the sky of the Ukrainian East, 17 July 2014 that ICAO has decided to set up this list. Last September, the Dutch Bureau of Investigation for security (OVV) concluded that this plane had been shot down by a surface to air missile. The pro-Russian rebels were singled out. A controversy had quickly sprung why leaving an airliner flying over a war zone? The authorities of Kiev, responsible for their airspace, had been accused of negligence.
Sinai also ranks high on the ICAO website. Three “messages to Airmen” (NOTAM) report risks of anti-air attacks, and the “complicated” situation there.
It would be more accurate to say that the situation is hopeless. Long demilitarized zone, Sinai is torn between the army and guerrilla Bedouins since the fall of President Mubarak in 2011. When two years later the Muslim Brotherhood were driven from power, an Islamist rebellion took root in the region . In November 2014, the jihadist group Ansar al-Bait Maqdis has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. Yesterday, these fighters have claimed to have shot down Russian aircraft. In the process, Lufthansa and Air France have announced to give up flying over the area.”

Does that mean that the Airbus broke up in the air, before it crashed?

A plane has crash-landed near South Sudan’s airport shortly after taking off. Conflicting reports suggest that up to 40 people have been killed on board and on the ground.
The crashed plane may have had about 20 crew and passengers, two of which survived, according to the South Sudanese president’s spokesman. Also, others on the ground may have been killed.
Reuters says its eyewitness has counted over 40 bodies at the crash site, but it is unclear how many of those were on board.

Major aviation disaster averted: Indian Navy tests missiles even as airspace remains open to traffic…

“As long as we haven’t established the causes of the incident, I consider it appropriate to suspend the flights of RUSSIAN aircraft to EGYPT. This primarily applies to the tourist flow,” FSB director Aleksandr Bortnikov told a meeting of the Russian Anti-Terror Committee on Friday.
https://www.rt.com/news/321055-russia-halt-flight-egypt/
There was no distress call prior to the crash.
Following the disaster, the head of RUSSIAN aviation agency Rosaviatsia, Aleksandr Neradko, said that all the signs suggested that the destruction of the plane occurred “in the air and at a great altitude.” The evidence for that was the remains of the plane and the bodies, which have been scattered over an area measuring about 8 km by 4 km, he said.
Hey, Pink. Yes, there was activity from India at the time MH370 disappeared.

Investigators say they are 99.9% certain RUSSIAN plane WAS brought down by a bomb as it is confirmed noise heard on black box was an explosion
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3309104/Investigators-say-99-9-certain-Russian-plane-brought-bomb-confirmed-noise-heard-black-box-explosion.html
Investigators have said that they are 99.9 per cent sure the Russian plane that came down over Egypt crashed due to a bomb after confirmation noise heard on the black box recording was an explosion.
Previously, Egyptian investigators had said they have yet to determine whether a noise picked up by the cockpit voice recorder in the final seconds of the Metrojet flight en route from Sharm el Sheikh to St Petersburg, Russia was the sound of a bomb.
However, senior officials in the intelligence services in Britain and the U.S. have said they are reportedly 99.9 per cent sure the jet was brought down by a bomb.
