I had fairly well concluded that the most likely cause was a fire disrupting the electrical and control systems, when CNN now say the sharp left turn was pre-programmed 12 minutes before sign off from Malaysian Air Traffic control, which was followed fairly quickly by that left turn.
CNN claim to have this from an US official, from data sent back before the reporting systems went off. It is hard to know what to make of it: obviously there are large economic interests that much prefer blame to lie with the pilots rather than the aircraft. But if it is true then the move was not a response to an emergency. (CNN went on to say the pilot could have programmed in the course change as a contingency in case of an emergency. That made no sense to me at all – does it to anyone else?)
I still find it extremely unlikely that the plane landed or crashed on land I cannot believe it could evade military detection as it flew over a highly militarized region. Somewhere there is debris on the ocean. There have been previous pilot suicides that took the plane with them; but the long detour first seems very strange and I do not believe is precedented. However if the CNN information on pre-programming is correct, and given it was the co-pilot who signed off to air traffic control, it is hard to look beyond the pilots as those responsible for whatever did happen. In fact, on consideration, the most improbable thing is that information CNN are reporting from the US official.
I forgot to mention that even a brand-new, fully-charged car battery may need a battery blanket below -50C.
I forgot to mention that even a brand-new, fully-charged car battery may need a battery blanket below -50C….
And ice crystals in the steering column caused trouble starting and steering the vehicle.
Also, ice would build up on the windshield wipers, thus the special technique of reaching out the window while driving and grabbing the wiper blade, then letting it go, so it would slap on the windshield and break off the ice buildup. Forget windshield washer fluid antifreeze..frozen solid after -50C.
Did I mention that belts break at -50C?
@Q Sounds horrible I am glad you moved too who knows what might have fell off next. 🙂
Oh, well, forget the Call of the Wild for me.
The thing is, strange and sometimes unpredictable things happen in extreme cold. Systems fail, and you really are at the mercy of the weather.
The longer a mechanical/electrical (and presumably a computer system, which did not exist in cars back in the day) is exposed to extreme temperatures, the greater the risk of system failure. The mirror didn’t fall off until several days of -50 and lower. Delicate computer systems may react much more quickly to temperature extremes. With dropping temperatures come humidity changes. In northern climates, people have to turn the humidstat down in cold winter weather, lest the double-pane windows ice up inside.
Humidity due to falling temperatures can be a car’s electrical system’s worst enemy. There is a spray for cars’ electrical wiring if it gets wet, but what of a Boeing 777? What happens when temperatures fall and humidity is in the wires or connectors? What if the humidity is inside a computer chip?
Presumably Malaysia doesn’t have any “Ice Pilots”. There’s a reason those guys use old and very old planes in the north: no computers!
Back in the day, I saw a raven land on a big electrical line in -50C. The line snapped in two and burst into flames on the ground. The transformer arced and exploded. I stayed in my car. Just another day.
I don’t suppose you can de-ice a plane or its systems in mid-air? Did anyone in the Maldives report Blue Ice?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_ice_(precipitation)
This is not as rare as Wiki states. It has been reported where I live, too.
Static electricity is another thing that increases as temperatures drop. As luck would have it, I have personally fried a computer and became the nemesis of tech support where I worked. They insisted on an anti-static mat, and when that didn’t work, told me wear all cotton, as wool and synthetics made me conduct electricity.
Sy does stir the pot, but he may be onto something. It’s kind of a big circle that has taken us back to where we started.
What with space balls and blue ice I might have to start going out wearing a safety helmet it’s going to really mess up my hair .
With the search coming up empty I have been looking at some of the older comments to see if anything stands out it’s very time consuming and not always easy to keep track of whats been discounted and if its discounted for a good reason .
I’m not sure if the relatives of MH370 really believe their loved ones are still alive, or if they are making these statements for insurance — or other — purposes.

There were numerous similar failures at airports around the world subsequent to this.
I’ve posted this before. Why has this issue gone nowhere?
The Thompson family is buried near Holly Springs, MS in Red Banks Cemetery, Marshall County.
Holly Springs had a reputation for tolerance. Many Jewish families, immigrants from France, attended the First Presbyterian Church there in the early days.

Holly Springs was also said to have been a safer place than Natchez during the Civil Rights conflicts in the 1960s.
Getting offside, but FYI:

Good news for Glasgow-Prestwick?

Rendition centre for the U.K.
HMS Gannet’s search and rescue helicopters are set to make a final farewell flypast of Scotland.
Royal Navy Sea Kings have been involved in thousands of rescues since the first unit was established 44 years ago.
But the service was replaced by a civilian team at Prestwick Airport on 1 January, bringing an end to military search and rescue in Scotland.
The Sea King will fly over the scene of many past rescues, starting from Prestwick at 10:00.
Weather permitting, the helicopters will fly up Loch Lomond, passing over Tyndrum at about 11:00 and then on to Glen Coe and Ben Nevis.
The crews then plan to follow the west coast down to Oban before flying over Inverlochlarig, Stirling, Edinburgh, Ayr and finally Troon, finishing at about 14:30.
Bristow Helicopters will eventually operate 10 search and rescue helicopter bases in the UK on behalf of HM Coastguard, a section of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Can We Rule Out a Ghost-Ship Endgame for MH370?

Cotswold Airport ‘booms’: Plane seen with damaged door
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-35312998
Pictures have emerged of a plane with its doors apparently blown off at an airport where loud “booms” have been reported.
Witnesses reported “a massive bang and a flash” on Tuesday evening at Cotswold Airport near Kemble.
The plane, with possible explosion damage, was moved afterwards.
Gloucestershire Constabulary said there had been “explosive training” at the airport but would not confirm whether the plane was involved.
The booms, heard from Kington St Michael to Malmesbury and Calne in Wiltshire, sparked calls to BBC Wiltshire and BBC Radio Gloucestershire as well as dozens of posts on social media.
Pilot and fight instructor Paul Shanley, 51, who lives just outside the village of Kemble said they had heard similar booms “three times before this but we’ve never got to the bottom of what it was”.
“There was an enormous explosion – really deep explosion – it was enough to wake up my daughter,” he said.
Mr Shanley said he took photos of a 747 on the runway which had “not normal damage” to its doors.
He said: “You can see the explosives around the door frame.”
A police spokesperson said: “I’m afraid we cannot confirm whether this is connected to the explosions heard in Kemble, due to the operationally sensitive nature of the training.”
