I had fairly well concluded that the most likely cause was a fire disrupting the electrical and control systems, when CNN now say the sharp left turn was pre-programmed 12 minutes before sign off from Malaysian Air Traffic control, which was followed fairly quickly by that left turn.
CNN claim to have this from an US official, from data sent back before the reporting systems went off. It is hard to know what to make of it: obviously there are large economic interests that much prefer blame to lie with the pilots rather than the aircraft. But if it is true then the move was not a response to an emergency. (CNN went on to say the pilot could have programmed in the course change as a contingency in case of an emergency. That made no sense to me at all – does it to anyone else?)
I still find it extremely unlikely that the plane landed or crashed on land I cannot believe it could evade military detection as it flew over a highly militarized region. Somewhere there is debris on the ocean. There have been previous pilot suicides that took the plane with them; but the long detour first seems very strange and I do not believe is precedented. However if the CNN information on pre-programming is correct, and given it was the co-pilot who signed off to air traffic control, it is hard to look beyond the pilots as those responsible for whatever did happen. In fact, on consideration, the most improbable thing is that information CNN are reporting from the US official.
Since a private drone has found the USS Indianapolis, sunk by a Japanese submarine just at the end of WWII, three miles deep on the floor of the Pacific somewhere between Guam and the Philippines, why cannot those Asian powers looking for the remains of MH370 find it? Looks like they refuse to look in the right place for some unexplained reason.
It’s interesting to think what would have happened to the war if the cruiser had been sunk with the components of the first atomic bomb on board on its way to the Philiipines rather than on its way back.
Wonder if the Truthers on the 9/11 thread will now be claiming that there was no plane here either!

Every time a Malaysia Airlines flight does something strange, tongues wag. Today of all days, with a subway attack in London, it seems unusual.
Oh, you are back. Just hiding from your al-Hilli nonsense, and posting more here.
Oh, it’s a “medical emergency”. I wonder if that’s anything like “technical issues” the same flight — MH3 –had earlier in the year?

It has been such a busy year for the folks at Malaysia Airlines. Leaking batteries (!) cockpit incidents, etc.

The lack of separation between large corporations and the state is something that is out in the open, too, this week, with the U.S. wanting to slap a 220 percent duty on aircraft manufacturer Boombardier.
All kinds of scenarios come to mind with Malaysia Airlines’ MH 370.

Jet engine testing and overhaul business GE Aviation Wales has announced plans to reduce its workforce by 100 at its giant plant in Nantgarw.
The US-owned venture, which employs 1,350 highly skilled staff at the plant, said the move is a result of a fall in the number of ‘engine shop visits’ to the plant.

Australia’s report into the missing Malaysia Airlines plane contains many questionable oddities and myths, and shows only one thing for sure – that three years on, we still have ‘no idea how, no idea why’

This emergency AD was prompted by an uncontained engine failure that occurred on an
Engine Alliance (EA) GP7270 turbofan engine. The failed engine had 3,527 cycles since new, which
is a relatively high cycle engine. The actions specified in this AD are intended to prevent failure of
the fan hub, which could lead to an uncontained release of the fan hub, damage to the engine, and
damage to the airplane.

THE search for MH370 is back on with the ship Seabed Constructor sailing from Durban today for the search area, 1800km west of Perth.
Website Vessel Finder put the Seabed Constructor, which has been chartered by US company Ocean Infinity, off the coast of Africa Wednesday morning with its destination listed as ”Perth” on February 7.
Neither the company nor the Malaysian Government have announced a final deal for the “no find, no fee search” but it is understood to be very close ….

A MALAYSIA Airlines flight from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur has been forced to make an emergency landing in Alice Springs after the plane shook violently on Thursday.
Passengers on board Flight MH122 have told of their terror, taking to social media to tell how the plane’s crew were “preparing to crash”.
”We were just bracing for the worst. I thought I was going to die,” Donna Edwards told Channel 9 News.
Passenger Hugh Wolton told the ABC, “We suddenly experienced a very violent shaking of the aircraft and that probably lasted about five minutes and it was coming from one of the engines.
“We got a call from the captain on the deck describing how to make plans for an emergency landing, you know, the wording used things like ‘impact,’ so we were suddenly bracing ourselves for a rough landing.”
Meanwhile another passenger, Peter Brooks, said the captain announced there would be “a couple of impacts” and some passengers thought the plane would come down in the desert. But about 45 minutes later the captain said they would land in Alice Springs, he said.
The A330-300 landed in Alce Springs at 5.46pm local time (6.16pm AEDT) with emergency crews on standby
The airline said the Airbus A330-300 plane experienced a “technical fault” in one of its two engines and the pilot decided to divert the flight. It said Flight 122, which had been flying close to the Western Australian state coastal town of Broome when it turned back, landed safely in Alice Springs and “safety was not at any time compromised.” Passenger Cath Cat said the landing was ultimately smooth.
“We were aware of a sudden shuddering noise and then we were told to prepare for an emergency landing and there were instructions,” Cat told Nine Network television. “But later – fairly rapidly actually – the pilot said that the situation was under control and that we were returning to Alice Springs and although it was an emergency landing technically, it was going to be like a commercial landing, which in fact happened and we were all very grateful for that.”
The airline said passengers would spend the night in Alice Springs and then be flown to Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
The husband of a passenger onboard the flight said his wife described the experience as “hell”.
Chin Kanani told the ABC his wife became alarmed when she heard a banging sound.
“She said she was on the loo when she started hearing loud banging noises from the right-hand side of the plane and that’s when all it started,” Mr Kanani said.
Malaysia Airlines suffered two disasters in 2014. Flight 370 vanished in March 2014 with 239 people on board and Flight 17 carrying 298 people was shot down over Ukraine a few months later.
