I had fairly well concluded that the most likely cause was a fire disrupting the electrical and control systems, when CNN now say the sharp left turn was pre-programmed 12 minutes before sign off from Malaysian Air Traffic control, which was followed fairly quickly by that left turn.
CNN claim to have this from an US official, from data sent back before the reporting systems went off. It is hard to know what to make of it: obviously there are large economic interests that much prefer blame to lie with the pilots rather than the aircraft. But if it is true then the move was not a response to an emergency. (CNN went on to say the pilot could have programmed in the course change as a contingency in case of an emergency. That made no sense to me at all – does it to anyone else?)
I still find it extremely unlikely that the plane landed or crashed on land I cannot believe it could evade military detection as it flew over a highly militarized region. Somewhere there is debris on the ocean. There have been previous pilot suicides that took the plane with them; but the long detour first seems very strange and I do not believe is precedented. However if the CNN information on pre-programming is correct, and given it was the co-pilot who signed off to air traffic control, it is hard to look beyond the pilots as those responsible for whatever did happen. In fact, on consideration, the most improbable thing is that information CNN are reporting from the US official.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2014/04/27/obama-malaysia-asia-china/8249119/
“President Obama on Sunday defended the Malaysian government’s handling of its fruitless search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, saying officials are working hard to find the aircraft that is believed to be deep at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.”
Need more be said?
Another perspective on the visit, and some hints, perhaps:

“… a formal agreement to cooperate in halting the spread of nuclear parts…”
“Anwar, to Malaysia, is almost as important a figure as Aung San Suu Kyi is in Burma,” said Andrew Khoo, a human rights lawyer here, referring to the country also known as Myanmar. “If President Obama took the time to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi, it is a little odd that he wouldn’t meet with Anwar.”
“Obviously, we don’t have all the details of what happened,” Mr. Obama said. “But if, in fact, the plane went down in the ocean in this part of the world…”
http://isis-online.org/isis-reports/detail/malaysia-finally-adopts-national-export-controls/
“After years of serving as an unregulated transshipment point for nuclear smugglers, Malaysia finally adopted a national export control law on April 5, 2010 aimed at thwarting illicit nuclear trade by Iran, Pakistan, and North Korea.”
A connection to Libya is also explained.
I keep thinking about those ever-ripe mangosteens, grown only in one province in Malaysia:

“By passing this law, Malaysia avoids embarrassment at the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit. Government minister Nazri Abdul Aziz indicated that he hoped the law would both protect Malaysian exporters from exploitation and reaffirm Malaysia’s commitment to the global nonproliferation regime.”
Carrot/Stick for Malaysian assimilation into the Grand Scheme, just like getting a seat on the ICAO, eh Q.
The author here seems “surprised” that the name Kamaluddin Abdullah comes up in this scandal involving a Malaysia Airlines property in London. Abdullah was absolved of wrongdoing in the nuclear parts smuggling scandal of 2004.

Commenters note the abundance of surprising “coincidences”. SCOMI has operations in Hyderabad,India. Malaysia Airlines has an MRO in Hyderabad. Of course there are other businesses of importance in Hyderabad.
“From the 1950s to the 1970s, Indian enterprises, such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), Bharat Electronics (BEL), Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), Andhra Bank (AB) and State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH)[107] were established in the city.

This video was posted to Youtube on March 8, 2014. At 6:00, it shows a Nokia Windows phone being used by a passenger during the flight to monitor air speed on a Malaysia Airlines 737-800, Flight MH 2640 (Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu). Apparently Nokia phones with Windows do function well on some Malaysia Airlines flights.

This one shows the same flight number, but with a 777-ER, from 2013:

One comment states: “This plane crashed Today. With 239 people onboard.”
Another comment from last link:
“I thought no electronic devices allowed during take off and landing?”
There are numerous other Youtube posts showing the 9M-MRO in flight and on the ground:

Nuclear warhead-seeking technology helps in the search for MH370:
http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/australian-exploration-company-claims-it-may-have-found-mh370-wreckage-says
“The technology that we use was originally designed to find nuclear warheads, submarines. Our team in the Ukraine decided we should try and help,” said company spokesperson David Pope to the news portal.
Clarification on the remote sensing technology used by GeoResonance:

This is on pprune being treated with skepticism so far .

I treat all claims of “we found it” with skepticism, Pink. I do think it’s interesting that this company, unlike some of the others, is a specialist in finding nuclear warheads and (nuclear?) submarines. Why would that be necessary, unless they’re looking for some sort of signature. The connection to the Ukraine is also intriguing to me.

“GeoResonance has exclusive access to demilitarised technology now owned by the Sevastopol National University of Nuclear Energy and Industry in Ukraine, Mr Kursa said.”
Is this what they’re talking about?
http://spie.org/x104009.xml
The Sevastopol technology is good at finding uranium ore deposits. The conclusion of the presentation mentions its ability to find black boxes:

It uses Magellan.
I can’t find any military connection to Georesonance. They appear to be entirely civilian.

Once again, I keep thinking of the al-Hilli thread. This time it’s because of SAR, Synthetic Aperture Radar, and active microwave remote sensing…and I cannot forget lasers.
http://wtlab.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~wataru/lecture/rsgis/rsnote/cp3/cp3-1.htm
Ben, GeoResonance is using technology developed for USSR national security purposes at the university in the Ukraine. See docstoc. They claim a 95 per cent detection success rate in finding minerals; they say other methods which have a 35 per cent success rate.
You don’t suppose they have a “mangosteen” detector?
Q; Universities are typical recruitment sources for the US, so there has to be a military connection, I just couldn’t find any other suggestions in that regard.
Amusing comments. At some point you have to point and laugh.
