Have been rather unwell the last couple of days, so please forgive lack of regular posts. BBC Hardtalk interview with Anders Fogh Rasmussen of NATO made me feel much worse. Totally incapable of acknowledging the disasters NATO and NATO members have inflicted on the world since the collapse of the Soviet Union – and the BBC totally incapable of serious questioning on the point.
The second half of the Prom was excellent. Ravel and all the encores. The good news is that it is being televised on 29th August on BBC Four. The audience sounded very enthusiastic. The first half contained new works by a Syrian and an Israeli composer. Barenboim was allowed to give his views on Gaza in the radio broadcast! I bet that will not be on the TV version.

Sinclair Lewis once opined that if fascism ever comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross. I was reminded of that comment when a good friend of mine recently wrote a letter to her local newspaper in Augusta Georgia decrying the killing of nearly two thousand Palestinian civilians in Gaza, describing the deaths as part of “the systemic erosion of the rule of law in our nation and across the globe” since 9/11. A devout Christian, she concluded how from her perspective “The world, it seems, has lost its moral compass.”
Unlike many letter writers, my friend has the life experience to back up her opinion, having served twenty-seven years as a United States Army lawyer, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Much of her most recent work has involved the cases of Guantanamo detainees.
It would have been reasonable to assume that my friend’s letter would elicit a variety of responses, and one might have expected that there would be at least some agreement that a world in which killing and wars have become the norm is an unwelcome aberration. But it was not so. Out of the more than one hundred comments the vast majority were violently and caustically opposed to the principle that Israel and the United States have not exactly been role models for a peaceful world. Many of the comments were both personally insulting and, frequently, highly offensive. Some of the remarks clearly came from military veterans while others had a Christian context.

The past weeks have witnessed unprecedented action by members of civil society across the world against the injustice of Israel’s disproportionately brutal response to the firing of missiles from Palestine.
If you add together all the people who gathered over the past weekend to demand justice in Israel and Palestine – in Cape Town, Washington, D.C., New York, New Delhi, London, Dublin and Sydney, and all the other cities – this was arguably the largest active outcry by citizens around a single cause ever in the history of the world.
A quarter of a century ago, I participated in some well-attended demonstrations against apartheid. I never imagined we’d see demonstrations of that size again, but last Saturday’s turnout in Cape Town was as big if not bigger. Participants included young and old, Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, agnostics, atheists, blacks, whites, reds and greens … as one would expect from a vibrant, tolerant, multicultural nation.
I asked the crowd to chant with me: “We are opposed to the injustice of the illegal occupation of Palestine. We are opposed to the indiscriminate killing in Gaza. We are opposed to the indignity meted out to Palestinians at checkpoints and roadblocks. We are opposed to violence perpetrated by all parties. But we are not opposed to Jews.”.

Hang on a minute you are citing a government report. What the hell do you believe? Whene I cite government reports the government are all compulsive liars who wouldn’t know what truth was if it bit them. But when you cite government reports suddenly the government is as honest and reliable as the day is long.
You seem to be holding two conflicting opinions at the same time believing them both to be true. There is a name for that I think. Maybe someone could remind me.
Republic of Scotland (20 Aug at 7.46 pm). Thanks for providing the link to the Wee Blue Book. It’s a good guide to most of the issues, from a “Yes” perspective. I find many of its arguments appealing and agree that on some key issues – use of sterling, membership of the EU – the “No” campaign has often been scaremongering/ bullying (as were John Birt’s arguments in the Guardian). I have no doubt that Scotland could be a successful independent state. However, I have considerable doubts about the ability of any Scottish government to dent significantly the stranglehold of multinational neo-con/lib economics and social divisiveness. There are good radical and enlightenment traditions in Scotland which I would rather see strengthening the prospects for UK-wide efforts to turn the world upside-down. For me the strongest argument for voting Yes would be if I thought there were realistic prospects for that to galvanise the somewhat dormant radical traditions in England, Wales and N. Ireland. On balance, I fear that the net result could well be that post-independence radical economic and social reforms, even if attempted, would be effectively undermined by English, US and multinational gold.

Dear Sirs
I am writing to ask for transparency in the preparations for the BBC Scotland independence referendum debate on the 25th August. I am concerned that it should be seen to be fair and balanced, both in terms of which company they employ for polling and organizing, and in how the audience is chosen. How the debate is conducted is also of great importance. Questions should not be seen to favour either side. It is only right that we should be given assurance of these in advance of the debate. Many Scots feel that there were serious problems with the management of the first debate They also believe that the BBC has been shown to favour one side in this campaign. The people of Scotland – no matter how they vote – deserve to be treated with respect and fairness in this very important debate.
Why is this important?
The referendum on the 18th September is the most important decision that the people of Scotland could be asked to make. A great deal is at stake for both sides of the argument, and for the rest of the UK. Many of us believe that much of the Scottish and UK media has treated the Yes Campaign and pro-independence supporters with contempt and outright condescension. This petition is urging BBC Scotland to recognize the importance of giving both sides of the debate an equal opportunity to voice their arguments for and against independence.

Portsmouth died years ago as a naval base. I agree Scotland’s lochs have been contaminated and violated by weapons testing. Most torpedo trials carried out on Loch Fyne and others in the West Highlands abused the local hospitality, upset fishermen trying to make a living and contributed nothing to the Highlands & Islands except to a small number of lodgings reserved by trials engineers.
D-Notices prevented the mishaps/tragedy/hazards from being exposed many of which I cannot elucidate here.

This us not the first time that this report has been cited in here (perhaps by you, perhaps by others as well).
Just a couple of points/questions:
1/. It may have been “buried”, but – because you cite and link to it – it is obviously now in the public domain. That is, well in time for the referendum.
2/. I suspect that commenters on here often attempt to play a fast one by citing sources which, on closer examination, turn out to be rather more nuanced (to put it mildly) than the commenter claims; the commenters in question probably rely on the fact that most people will not bother to read the link/source in detail.
In that connection, why do you not set out briefly the key findings and conclusions of that report? Is it perhaps because you fear that it will not back up your position?
3. The report is, you say, 30 years old. As a general remark, I can recall various reports of that period – and even before – the conclusions of which have been comprehensively invalidated subsequently.They include reports forecasting that oil reserves would have run out by now, that various minerals would have run out by now, and that the main problem for workers in the 21st century would be how to occupy themselves in their free time since, thanks to mechanisation and computerisation, the working week would have been reduced to around 15 hours for most people.
