What Did You Expect? 693

I have no sympathy at all for anybody who voted No on the grounds of the pledges by Brown, Miliband, Cameron and Clegg about constitutional change, and is now whingeing about the blatant dishonour of those pledges. I cannot understand how anybody could be so stupid as to have believed them, and yet have a brain capable of sparking respiration.

Labour is interested in losing no influence of Scottish Labour MPs on any UK or English matters. It wants greater powers to English metropolitan councils which are controlled by Labour – because that will give Labour careerists more jobs and access to contracts. Those are Labours “constitutional reform” goals. The Conservatives “constitutional reform” goals are to keep Scotland’s tax on oil revenues and tax on whisky coming to Westminster, while loading greater responsibilities but no more money on the Scottish parliament, and stopping Scottish MPs voting on English matters thus guaranteeing conservative apparatchiks continued jobs and access to contracts.

Both Tories and Labour want to keep the appalling corrupt and undemocratic House of Lords for its jobs for apparatchiks, access to contracts etc.

Nobody cares what the Lib Dems think anyway.

I ask again – what did you expect?

This is the collective wisdom of Andy Myles and myself, over an excellent mackerel breakfast at Nom De Plume.

    Our cyberstalking wannabe schoolmaster has to be introduced like this on a daily basis and on every thread, so the good people who read this never mind comment know what a fuckwitbender he really is.
    Now enjoy your weekend.

    Salmond himself does not even make the claims for him that you do. He seemingly proudly acknowledges the diversity of the yes campaign.

    Oh fuck it. Here we go again.

    Which is why I said ‘it’s my belief that…’ and I am sure he might modestly deny that he brought the principal – almost only – motor of the Yes campaign, the SNP, back from the edge of extinction. Twice, if you count Swinney’s interregnum. But I doubt if the denial would be completely sincere.

    Ishmael:

    You seem to have such fixed ideas ba’al,
    Not at all. I am trying to find a route, that’s all. I’m stating my ideas as definitely as I can, and leaving you to find the flaws. I haven’t noticed you qualifying your opinions to make life easier for me. Sorry if your basic philosophy and mine are different, but the, er, real world is like that.

    you seem to have everything well mapped out.

    This is a CRITICISM????

    (…)

    I have difficulty understanding the rest. A bit metaphorical for me, but I’ve often thought I’m Aspergers, so I’ll have to leave it.

    (Earlier)

    How about answering (directly) some of the replies

    How about reading my comments?

    rather than starting you own pontification again.

    My pontification’s as good as anyone else’s here. I will pontificate when I feel like it.

    Now can we leave the field to Tony Opmoc? He’s nicer than either of us.

    Fred. Regarding your comment on 20th September 6:50pm

    Could you clarify whether your one word response – “Racist” – was referring to:

    1. The conditional part of the statement which referred to Scottish MP’s being unable to vote on English only issues in Westminster (ie, you feel this is racist against your interests as a resident of Scotland on the grounds that any vote by only English MP’s at Westminster over budgets could adversely affect the amount received by Scotland, thus disadvantaging yourself as a resident of that colony)?

    2. The quid pro quo part of the statement about English people residing in Scotland not being allowed to vote in the referendum?

    3. Both of the above.

    Thank you for your anticipated attention about lowed nd consideration.

    “But I doubt if the denial would be completely sincere.”

    Probably true but that doesn’t make it any more real.

    Quite how much history is driven by individuals is an age old dispute. I am in the camp that believes history is not made of special individuals leading the stupid masses where they otherwise could not have gone. I suggest we make heroes of an average person who happens to be in the right place to rise to the occasion.

    Anyway, we only need to wait to see who’s right with this one. Presumably, you expect the Yes campaign to collapse without Capn Salmond at the helm. As a naive romantic mug living in a hippy socialist dreamworld I would expect it to continue.

    That is Not Allowed

    Polly Jean Harvey..You Have Just Broken ALL The Rules…

    It was Raining and I was alone in my car..and my wife and kids were asleep in the tent..and no I wasn’t smoking anything..

    Fedup

    “So you believe Israel has the right to exist?

    As per 1948 borders only!”
    ____________________

    Fedup, you have fallen into the same trap as I successfully set for Mr Scorgie.

    Let me explain. The fact is that, however much you might wish it not to be so, the borders of Israel proper (ie, excluding the West Bank of course) are as they are and Israel is not going to shrink back to its 1947 projected size.

    Now, that given, if you say “I, Fedup, accept the right of Israel to exist but only within the 1947 projected borders” you are in fact saying that Israel does not have the right to exist.

    Did you understand?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Another condition for Isarel ro be allowed to exist appears to be that it should not have nuclear weapons; you write:
    “Without any of the nuclear, thermonuclear ie atomic bombs and hydrogen bombs”
    ___________________
    In your opinion, should the USA, UK, Russia, France, China, Pakistan and India – all nuclear powers – be allowed to exist?
  • Just saying
    History is bunk, so said Henry Ford. The referendum is history.
    What matters now is to prevent the chinless wonder from spending £2 Billion of our money to help his zionist ilk to expand their borders – bibi is under some messianic delusion that his destin is to be the next dayan, to usher in the coming of the Moliech, JC wasnt the one they have been waiting for,he was an impostor so far as the chanukah crowd is concerned.
    The issue is plainly control of BBC News, it really just does boil down to that alone; failing that the utter destruction of the BBC. I would advise England, Wales and Northern Ireland to follow Scotland’s example and stop paying the iniquitous TV license, legally it is an unenforceable voluntary subscription. With control of the BBC, destruction of the Labour Party, not to mention the allied Tory wing too, by exposing their absolutely treacherous and disgusting record, would automatically and quickly follow. I see a UCS scenario arising at PQ, barely half a mile from the famous occupation and sit-in. No bevvying, no vandalism etc. it’s our property to look after and utilise, and nothing coming in or going out (on the air) without the consent of the 45% plus the 40% who were cruelly duped, let the remainder the diehard unionists and I’m alright Jocks, fume.
    Tony Cheers. I am a fan of P J Harvey. Let England Shake. Brilliant.
    My parents lived at Studland and I got married there. One of my father’s friends was a leading light in getting the railway to Swanage reopened. It was a big job but what a boon for tourism, the locals and the environment.
    Craig recently warned “commenter” Rehmat that he would not accept any more persistent anti-Semitism.
    But I haven’t seen the handle “Rehmat” for a while.
    Can anyone tell me which handle “Rehmat” was posting under to incur Craig’s justified wrath, and why have the usual denouncers of sock-puppeting remained silent?
    Thanks.
    Tony M,
    Cheer up mate you wrote the best piece..over the last week that I habe read…
    I copied and pasted it On The Telegraph’s Website…
    they all knew it was not me..I didn’t have to make that clear…
    I can’t write like that
    What you wrote was just so good..I just salivated on your words (well not really – but you know what I mean)
    Are you part of the Film Crew Too??
    I was seriously impressed.
    @Date Hansell
    I think I made it clear in a later post. Countries are geographical not genetic. Someone who lives in Scotland has every right to vote on Scottish matters in Scotland. If you disenfranchise someone based on their genetics, where they or their ancestors were born that is racist.
  • Rob Royston
    “Mochyn69 20 Sep, 2014 – 3:28 pm
    I just posted this on the previous thread:
    The really odd thing about the referendum result is that the YES constituencies recorded a substantially lower percentage turnout, in the 70s, way below the national average.
    What can we deduce from that? Anybody??”
    I read this last night and it kept coming back to me today. You may have answered the riddle here. Could the real turnout have been in the 70s percentage across the country and all the very high percentages are the result of rigging?
    They may have failed to rig these areas and the Yes vote prevailed. There has to be an investigation, maybe pick one area and trace every voter.
  • mike
    If someone can answer this for me, I’ll be grateful. Apologies if it has already be explored.
    At 10.25 pm on Referendum Day, on the BBC, Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson said some “sample ballots” had been opened before the close of voting and that this had indicated a clear lead for No. “We have had people there for a few days,” she said.
    Is this standard practice, to open postal votes before 10pm? I simply do not know the answer and have never heard of this before. Thanks.
    As the Unionist commentariat did 2 years ago, I think the Yes Campaign should keep pressing the issue of new powers with the cry of “Name the date”. That might be a good way of keeping some of he Yes momentum going.
    If the Coalition foot-drag on this: “Where are the powers? Name the date!” We could have a nice wee march through North Queensferry.
    Finally, I think all in the Yes Movement – voters and supporters – have a moral duty to buy the Sunday Herald newspaper. Let’s make it the biggest in the (still) United Kingdom.
    Round One has been lost. The fight for local democracy continues.
  • Tony M
    I read from the low Glasgow and Dundee turnouts and no doubt many other places, that many ballot boxes never arrived at the count, or were much lighter when they did so. However scrutineers are insistent that these things couldn’t have easily happened under their noses, I’m not so certain of that, but it was the media largely which stole it.
  • Tony M
    PS Keep a nice big JPEG of the Daily Record’s “The Vow” front page on file, just in case we need it for agit prop promotional purposes.
  • Tony M
    Many people they would hope to reach simply can’t afford newspapers, that is the reality, a newspaper or bread would be a choice, not both, it does not penetrate Labour/Tory heads anymore, they don’t care how close to the edge people are living. This debacle should not become a job-creation scheme for those who find and are prepared to say, commendably that our present media is unpalatable and their consciences, their sense of social justice revolts at telling lies to vulnerable frightened people, while others in the media still, revel in doing so. It is relatively unskilled but lucrative work.
    Anyway, we only need to wait to see who’s right with this one. Presumably, you expect the Yes campaign to collapse without Capn Salmond at the helm.
    I don’t know where you get that. It may well be that he felt it would weaken <with him at the helm. That the demographic he appeals to is too limited. Happy to wait and see how Sturgeon (presumably) does. And delighted if it does better.
    As a naive romantic mug living in a hippy socialist dreamworld…
    Your description, not mine, lol. But seriously, I think that a Yes win offered a chance of upsetting the globalist applecart at least slightly, and constructing something saner. I think it’s sensible now to reverse the priorities. Instead of Yes being a vehicle to not being ruled by beancounters, it’s the other way round. A successful movement for social equity will clear a path for the next attempt at independence, or even, just maybe, make it unnecessary (though there’ll always be a Siol na Gael.) But like independence, it’s got to appeal to more than just the core revolutionaries.
    Vaguely relevant ramble:
    Face it, Salmond didn’t meet Murdoch* to discuss the weather, and we can only guess what that was about. But it’s at least arguable that Salmond and Murdoch saw a possible mutual interest in an alternative source of information in Scotland, given Murdoch’s detestation of the BBC and Salmond’s awareness that all Scottish media outlets were stacked against him. Salmond’s a pragmatist. He was negotiating with someone who knows how to use broadcasting, print and the web to reach the masses. The comfortably-off, employed, politically inert masses, whose vote and opinion counts. Still, it doesn’t look as if Salmond was prepared to concede enough – the Scottish Sun sat on the fence, and the English version was downright hostile. Or, maybe, Murdoch’s good at picking winners to support, and didn’t think Yes was a winner. Whatever.
