    Question of the day:

Which is worse, and why – an Estonian President educated in the USA or a Russian President educated in the KGB?

    _________________

That may well be the best outcome but it would have to be accompanied by a number of other steps once the Russian Trojan horse has been eliminated, eg : a decent Partnership and Cooperation Agreement with the EU with a view to progress towards EU membership (why not? the country is smaller than Turkey, with whom we’ve nee negotiating for years); fast track membership of NATO (an excellent response to Russian expansionism and onbe they have deserved); in the meantime, military assistance to Ukraine for defensive purposes; a continuation of targeted sanctions against Russian leaders and interests as a way of showing appreciation to President Putin.

As far as the Baltic Republics are concerned the Russian minorities should be given the choice of leaving for Russia with generous financial assistance if they feel that Russia is their true motherland.

Which is worse and why : a German Chancellor raised in the old German “Democratic” Republic or a Russian President raised in the KGB?

Perhaps some of the files on the former even passed over the desk of the latter!!

  • Habbabkuk (la vita è bella)

And a final one for the moment (pay attention, RoS!):

With whom would you rather spend the afternoon at a pro-democracy rally – with an inanimate puppet called Punch or with an animate one called Medvedev?

    That’s ethnic cleansing.

Should Jews in, ooh, say Britain or France or the US, be treated similarly? Involvement with the Zionist organisation would indicate allegiance to a foreign power, yes?

Or could they choose to stay while continuing to think the foreign power is their motherland?

    Just asking.

  • charles

You don’t make it clear whether you want them to choose between

    * having the foreign place as their motherland, in which case they should be paid to move there

    * not having the foreign place as their motherland

or, in the event that they do think the foreign place is their motherland, to choose between

    * getting paid to leave

    * staying

    One for Habb.

No, not at all. Purely volontary and designed to enable anyone of Russian origin who unaccountably feels unhappy in the Baltic States and thinks they moght be happier in Russia to act upon that feeling without suffering financial loss.

No, I don’t think so, the reason being the following:

Mr Putin can, if so minded, claim that the Russian minorities in the Baltic Republics are being persecuted and use that claim as a pretext for military aggression against those states.

There is not the remotest possibility of the State of Israel trying the same stunt.

    Hope that helps.

    NHS FOR SALE
    Myths ,Lies and Deception
by Jacky Davis, John Lister and David Wrigley

    Foreword by Harry Smith
    Introduction by Martin McKee

‘Essential reading in the battle to save the NHS before private companies bleed it dry.’ Ken Loach

‘This is the most important recent book about the future of the NHS. It examines the havoc created by Andrew Lansley’s costly and damaging “reforms” and George Osborne’s spending cuts. It’s a must read.’ Owen Jones

In 2010 David Cameron’s coalition government discarded pre-election promises about the NHS. Instead they imposed savage spending cuts and pushed through ‘reforms’ which put at risk the health and lives of all of us. As a result the NHS is now in crisis.

NHS for Sale challenges their myths and lies, arguing that:
    * The NHS is efficient and affordable and didn’t need radical reform.
    * The private sector is not cheaper or more efficient than the public sector.
    * The government is privatising the NHS.
    * The NHS market is wasting billions of pounds while harming the service.
    * The coalition’s Health and Social Care Act:
Has not put GPs in the driving seat.
    Has reduced patient choice.
Has reduced community control over healthcare priorities.
    Has increased bureacracy and waste.

This book sets out what needs to be done to protect the NHS against corporate greed, and enable future governments to meet the challenge of delivering high quality and affordable health care for all.

Dr Jacky Davis is a consultant radiologist in north London, co-chair of the NHS Consultants’ Association, a member of the BMA UK Council and is a founder member of Keep our NHS Public.

Does the mention of a ‘truth and reconciliation element’ in the inquiry imply that certain criminals will escape justice?

    Hysteria versus Impunity
    July 14, 2014

It is a mystery why the Observer failed to name Lord Greville Janner as the paedophile abusing boys from care homes. The facts of this particular boy’s continued molestation, and the existence of the letters to him from Janner, have been public knowledge for decades. I can only presume that Britain’s appalling libel laws, which function solely to protect the very rich from exposure of their misdeeds, are the reason for the Observer’s reticence. My own view is that the gross suppression of freedom of speech in the UK has been insufficiently considered as a major reason for the impunity which the wealthy and the powerful have enjoyed for so long.

Terror experts have ruled that ISIS video footage appearing to show the executions of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians as being fake…

According to Florida-based Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium, the 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians purported to have been decapitated in the video entitled “Signed With Blood: To The Nation Of The Cross,” was ruled to have been ‘staged’ due to the excessive anomalies seen in the dramatic 5 minute film

Ukraine is now so desperate to murder more residents in its Donbass region, that it is conscripting for its ethnic-cleansing there to clear the Donbass land of its residents (who had voted 90% for the man whom Obama overthrew in February 2014), so that children who have been adopted or fostered by parents in foreign countries are now being drafted to do it.

The goal is that after a period of instruction, they’re introduced into the conflict zone.

Young Ukrainians , who are in foster families in Aragon, are being claimed by the Government of Ukraine to return to their country to be introduced into the conflict zone, according to the president of the Association of Child Welfare of Aragon, Eduardo Puente.

The purpose of this call-up is to perform military service in Ukraine. After a month of military training, they’re sent into the war zone, say Eduardo Puente, and Angelines, the latter being the foster mother of Tola.

A youth who has been called from Ukraine to join the army soon. Puente explained that his association, which coordinates a program of Ukrainian children who are welcomed in Aragonese families during summers and the holidays, knows five cases in the community, where young people are in this difficult situation, but is convinced that “many more” exist.

The European Union has provided Ukraine with €30 million ($34 million) in funding, which Kiev is using to build and renovate migrant detention centers, along with other facilities where they are housed temporarily.

The International Organization for Migration received several million euros to support Ukrainian authorities in such areas as the internment of undocumented migrants. Brussels is apparently hoping that the system will reduce the number of asylum seekers in Europe — without attracting too much attention.

In 2010, the human rights organization Human Rights Watch criticized the EU for investing millions to divert flows of refugees from Europe toward Ukraine, while neglecting to take sufficient steps to ensure the humane treatment of refugees in Ukraine.

On February 17, 2015, The Guardian ran a story with the headline “Russia shelled Ukrainians from within its own territory, says study.” The title alone is enough to convince many casual observers that yes, the mainstream media reporting on the civil war in Ukraine has been correct all along. You see, it’s all because of Russian aggression, or so the meme would go.

But closer analysis of this story, and the key players involved, should cause any reasonably intelligent and logical person to seriously doubt the veracity of nearly every aspect of the story.

Let’s begin first with the headline and subhead which, as anyone in media knows, is often all that will be read by many readers. The headline leads with a conclusion: Russia shelled Ukraine from within Russian territory. Simple. Clear.

Why bother reading further? Well, in reality, the article both overtly and tacitly admits that the so called “study” (more on that later) has not reached that clear conclusion, not even close. Here are some key phrases sprinkled throughout the piece that should give pause to any serious-minded political observer or analyst.

Despite the declaration in the headline, a close reader encounters phrases such as “near conclusive proof,” “estimated trajectories,” “likely firing positions,” and other ambiguous phrases that are more suggestive than they are declarative.

In other words, these are mere rhetorical flourishes designed to lead casual, uninformed readers to make conclusions that are simply not backed up by the evidence.

Senior member of Hamas’ political bureau Mousa Abu-Marzkouk yesterday revealed that Quartet peace envoy Tony Blair is trying to blackmail Hamas in return for reconstructing the Gaza Strip.

On his Facebook page, Abu-Marzouk revealed five conditions put by the Quartet that Hamas has to meet in order to make room for the reconstruction of what the Israeli occupation destroyed during last summer’s 51-day war in Gaza.

Abu-Marzouk said: “Once again, and in the name of the international community, Tony Blair is exploiting the tragedy made by the Israeli occupation that includes the destruction of homes and making people homeless.”

Expressing deep concern about the devastated people in Gaza, Abu-Marzouk said: “Destroyed homes of Palestinians in Gaza became shrines to Blair and his likes. Blair says that there is no reconstruction unless these five conditions are fulfilled, and Hamas has to agree to:

    Accept the Palestinian reconciliation.

Accept the political programme based on a Palestinian state on 1967 borders.

Reiterate that Hamas is a Palestinian faction with only Palestinian goals and it is not part of any Islamist movement with regional goals.

Adopt the two-state solution as a final, not temporary, solution for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Send an assurance message to Egypt that Gaza is not a terror base for Sinai terrorists and hold talks with the Egyptian government to stop terrorism in Sinai.”

“These are the conditions for Hamas to be accepted by the international community as well as the Quartet’s conditions for rebuilding Gaza and improving living standards,” Abu-Marzouk said.

He added: “These conditions do not mean that Hamas will deal with the Zionist enemy; not even one condition was put on Israel.”

Take a look at the new handcuffs that certain police forces around the world will be using in the near future.

Besides cops, handcuff companies, and BDSM enthusiasts, hardly anyone will cheer this potent symbol of state oppression.

Handcuffs provide an easy pathway for police brutality. Whether it’s beating children, raping women, or garden variety savagery, cops routinely carry out violence on people while they are handcuffed.

Alas, simple handcuffs are no longer enough for the militarized police state. In the near future, authorities may have “augmented detainee restraints” that deliver electric shocks, sedatives, and paralytic drugs to detainees. Scottsdale Inventions, based in Arizona, filed a patent application for just such a device.

The handcuffs can deliver electric shocks between 20,000 and 150,000 volts for durations of 0.5 to 10 seconds. Shocks can be triggered remotely from up to 300 feet away, or programmed to happen automatically in a variety of situations such as the detainee stepping outside a boundary.

It doesn’t take much to imagine sicko cops using the handcuffs as a torture device when no one is looking.

Drugs are delivered through a moveable needle or gas injection system. A great deal of fear and anxiety can be induced in a person who is told they could be shocked or drugged at any moment.
