    “Note: at least four of them have had Fulbright scholarship grants. This is clearly a US CIA-funded misinformation site. ”

    Yes of course anything or anyone who disagrees with the worldview of Mr Goss must be US CIA funded and into misinformation – one wonders why he always leaps to such an assumption rather than saying they do it for love or belief in a cause that they consider just – the only logical conclusion is that he believes that the world operates in the same way as himself.

    Good old Mary.

    The Royals are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

    Reminds me of her sourpuss reaction when Prince William took a job as an air-sea rescue pilot….

    Wonder how many Russian oligarchs will turn up at Tory ball tonight – not a few if the last one is anything to go by – perhaps they could take Herbie and Mr Goss as their guests.

    This time, according to The Daily Boris, they are non grata…

    At least there will be no embarrassments from Russian oligarchs this year — they have not been invited. At last summer’s Black And White fundraising gala, a storm of controversy resulted when Lubov Chernukhin, the wife of Vladimir Chernukhin, who was Russia’s deputy finance minister under President Putin in 2000, paid £160,000 to play tennis with Cameron and Boris Johnson.

    This one’s for offshore hedge funds. Unstated – whether Tory donors Richard Caring and Sir Philip Green, who have a lot of money in common, will be present. After revelations of HSBC’s relaxed attitude to the filthy rich laundering their profits through its Swuss branch, they’d likely be the focus of attention.

    Thanks for that, Resident Dissident.

    It reminds me that Mr Goss has not yet told us the names of those alleged four Fulbright scholars.

    If he doesn’t do so – and reveal his source for that statement – we shall have to conclude that he was being economical with the truth again.

    Then there was also my secind question to Mr Goss, which read as follows:

    “Secondly: even if four of the people listed have benefited from Fulbright scholarships, how do you arrive at the conclusion that http://www.stopfake.org is a “CIA-funded misinformation site”? Are you attempting to say that a Ukrainian cannot throw light on the truth of what is happening in Eastern Ukraine because he or she might have studied for a time in the US?”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Come on, Mr Goss – why the wait? Are you awaiting details from Moscow HQ?
  • RobG
    Summerhead, very well put, and thank you.
    Please don’t think you are wasting your ideas on this forum.
    Your thoughts are very much appreciated and give a great perspective to people who are compltely ignorant of these matters.
    Perhaps some of the cleverclogs on this forum could enlighten us as to how they would run Russia.
    Perhaps by dealing with the oligarchs rather than encouraging them – not introducing a flat income tax rate of 20% might have been a start. Perhaps by taking measures to tackle corruption rather than increasing it. Perhaps by not taking over and closing down opposition tv stations, radio channels and newspapers. Perhaps by reduicing capital outflows from the country rather than by increasing them. Perhaps by respecting the independence of his neighbours………….. I could go on but I rather doubt that you recognise that there are other ways of running Russia other than that followed by Putin and Norwegian democracy. There are plenty of young decent highly qualified Russians full of alternative ways for running their country – perhaps you might wish to listen to them first.
    With you on your underlying thought, Baal, but just to clarify:
    if you’re talking about the Green who’s the boss man of BHS etc, then the question of tax evasion through Switzerland does not arise because the nominal owner of his businesses is his wife, who is a resident of Monaco and not the UK.
    are you rather thinking of the other Green (a Milord rather than a mere Sir)who was the boss of HSBC and became a junior Minister?
  • Resident Dissident
    “Come on, Mr Goss – why the wait? Are you awaiting details from Moscow HQ?”
    Too busy looking through his old subsidised cycling tour brochures with eager anticipation I suspect. I am not sure anyone has told him that Putin doesn’t fill in the pot holes on country roads or that the oligarch don’t worry too much about what they cannot see through the smoked glass windows of their Hummers.
  • Resident Dissident
    HAbba
    Both Greens are embroiled in the HSBC affair per this morning’s Guardian.
  • Summerhead
    Resident Dissident – you’re clearly a very brave woman if you’d take on the oligarchs in such a confrontational manner.
  • Dreoilin
    “Reminds me of her sourpuss reaction when Prince William took a job as an air-sea rescue pilot…”
    Actually, he hasn’t started that yet. He’s still in training for it.
    “32-year-old William is currently studying for the pilot’s licence that will enable him to fly EC145 T2 aircraft when he joins the East Anglia Air Ambulance Service this summer.
    Although the prince is already qualified to fly a Sea King helicopter, his new role requires five months of training, which he is currently completing, 14 exams and a flight test.”
    Resident Dissident, I quoted a well-known Russian earlier, and then another Russian has come on this thread (‘Summerhead’) and you arrogantly dismiss the both of them, wrapped-up as you are in the western playbook.
    Who the fuck are you to dismiss genuine Russian voices?
  • Ba'al Zevul
    A little support for the notion that Russian oligarchy has less of a problem working with Western oligarchy than might be supposed….
    http://valdaiclub.com/russia_and_the_world/75000.html
    The Valdai Club was founded by Putin, and it is of course possible that this piece is handy for promoting Putin’s injured innocence. Or that it signifies a possible policy shift ny Putin. Or that it is intended to give that impressionm while its author is at this moment in the Lubianka. Hard to tell.
  • Peacewisher
    @Ba’al. Not for a quiet life, please. Say what you don’t agree with.
    I’m not a scholar of history, but history fascinates me. According to one Russian scholar (youtube video, English subtitles) it seems that Russian intelligence did little to nurture the younger generation in and around Kiev, whilst US/UK/Israel were nurturing their hearts and minds like mad, under their very noses. The result, by 2013, was that they had become 90% Galician.
    The scholar is quite scathing about the Russian establishment over this entire 20 year period, as indeed is The Saker. But Russian intelligence isn’t stupid (!) Perhaps they woke up late and just couldn’t handle the social media revolution. Anyway, they lost the youth of Kiev. But the Donbass certainly weren’t lost, and what of the rest of Ukraine… there must be a lot of older Ukrainians who are mighty confused by all this mobilisation and call ups to fight against fellow Ukrainians. This is a big mess and the last thing it needs is more military hardware.
    I hope the separatists get their independent land granted from Ukraine in good faith, in the interests of peace, in the same way that Kosovo was eventually parted from Serbia. It will take good grace from the west to achieve that, and I believe that Merkel and Hollande are providing good leadership here.
  • Mary
    Yes the second in line is in training but not for air sea rescue but rather for air ambulance work.
    Handy that he can pop home to the house on the Sandringham estate that Her Maj has handed to the lucky couple and which has been nicely refurbished. Only £1.5m from us, the idiot taxpayers. A snip.
    One requires a conservatory! Wills and Kate set to join Middle Britain with glass-roofed extension at new Sandringham home as aides apply for planning permission
    New garden room on kitchen part of changes at Anmer Hall in Norfolk
    Royal couple and Prince George are set to move in within months
    Mansion would be the couple’s secondary residence after Kensington Palace
    I gave you the link Noddy, look them up.
    As to Resident Dissident – way past his bedtime – and New Labour to the core – but I will say this. A while back he said something like “I bet you were a supporter of Militant when you were in the Labour Party.”
    No. I never went to Militant meetings, never aligned with the group, or even the Socialist Worker Labour group though I thought many of their ideas were sound. But when I was in the Labour Party it was a ‘broad church’. It included many diverse groups some you might agree with, some you might not. But that is what debate and discussion is all about.
    Along came Tony Blair. Out went the basic tenet of Labour Party policy. Then he got rid of the Militants and gave us another Tory Party with an almost unrecognisable difference between the two, a system very close to the money-mad Yanky-doodle-dandy electoral system.
    I see Dave Nellist on anti-drone marches. I see him on anti-austerity demonstrations. He is a fine speaker and parliament has been deprived of a source for good by undemocratically getting rid of an elected MP at the say-so of that evil warmonger Tony Blair.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Nellist
    So Resident Dissident, who can hardly let a comment go by without mentioning my name (respect for that) now I have told you about my affiliation to the Labour Party, and non-support for Militant, can you please tell me if you are old (clause four) Labour or a warmongering Blairite?
  • Mary
    Frau Merkel from her EU fiefdom. Outrageous.
    ‘Israel has already modified those war vessels delivered, each now being armed with long-range, (SLCM) cruise missiles equipped with nuclear warheads, plus a maximum of 16 torpedoes: a naval task-force capable of destroying most of the Middle East and Southern Europe. It also gives the Israelis an offshore, second strike, nuclear capability.
    Germany, itself, has no such offensive nuclear armament, neither has either France or Britain of such size and power, for Israel is estimated to also possess up to 400 nuclear warheads. All of which means that Merkel has effectively made Israel into the most powerful nuclear weapons state outside of the US and Russia!
    The rationale for Merkel’s strategic error in altering the balance of power not only in the Middle East but also in Europe with consequences yet to be determined, is unknown.
    It is too late, of course, to reverse her extraordinary decision to deliver a fleet of (now) SLCM-armed, nuclear-equipped, undersea naval vessels to the government of the most contentious piece of land on earth. The damage has been done and the repercussions will ensure dangerous instability – or worse – for decades after Chancellor Merkel has left office.’
    Correction. The £1.1m was for the royal spongers’ renovations to their apartment in Kensington Palace. Her Maj is paying for the Anmer Hall work. Same difference IMHO.
  • Peacewisher
    Mary… that’s shocking. Why would she do such a thing? There must be a logical reason for it…
    Thanks for the correction about Prince William.
    But you do recall, do you not, Mother Mary’s sourpuss reaction to the news that he was taking the job? I think she was whinging on about hum depriving someone else of a job!
    Again, a case of damned if they do and damned of they don’t.
  • Peacewisher
    Mary: PS, I meant Merkel, not the Queen. You know how much a plumber or electrician costs these days!
  • Habbabkuk (la vita è bella)
    From Mr Goss to Habbabkuk:
    “I gave you the link Noddy, look them up.”
    Here is what the link you gave and to which you have again referred says (cut-and-paste, à la Mary):
    Mr Goss
    And when you have identified for us the line or lines which back up your claim that the editorial team contains four Fulbright scholars, perhaps you’d go on to answer my second question, which read as follows:
    “Secondly: even if four of the people listed have benefited from Fulbright scholarships, how do you arrive at the conclusion that http://www.stopfake.org is a “CIA-funded misinformation site”? Are you attempting to say that a Ukrainian cannot throw light on the truth of what is happening in Eastern Ukraine because he or she might have studied for a time in the US?”
It will take good grace from the west to achieve that, and I believe that Merkel and Hollande are providing good leadership here.”
    I hope so too. But this poxy proxy war on behalf of the USA needs to be continued if the USA is going to remain the major player in Europe. Of course the downside is if the USA does not remain in control of Europe and the world economy there are only two options:
    1. Nuclear War (MAD)
    2. Capitulation
    Congressmen and women of the USA do not know what capitulation means. They have ruled so long they cannot demean themselves to tell the American public they have failed them. Because there will be no election euphoria, no college girls kicking up their legs and showing their knickers in support of their party. And because of this arrogance they believe that if they are defeated there will be war-trials on a Geneva scale (which of course ought to be the case).
    I propose a solution in the interests of saving the planet. Start again. But I mean start again (get rid of the petrodollar). Forgive the US. I know it is hard. But it is better than animosity. We are all human. Forgiveness is at the heart of humanity.
  • Peacewisher
    @Habby. I hadn’t linked this when I wrote this earlier piece, but this does look like a group of like-minded western-leaning people seeking to influence opinion… and that is the way of the world. What mystified the Russian historian was that no-one from the Russian-leaning community succeeded in countering it.
