The appalling President Karimov of Uzbekistan does not mellow in old age. He has just given a speech in which he describes homosexuality as a “vile western phenomenon.” The only news report I can find adds that he said:
“If a man lives with a man, or a woman with a woman, I think that something there isn’t quite right, or some change has happened,”
I am told by someone who was present that he went on to order a still harsher clampdown on gays by the authorities. I have personal friends who were taken in by police and severely tortured for being gay in Uzbekistan. Yet the British Home Office still routinely refuses claims by gay Uzbek asylum seekers.
Homosexuality was in fact an accepted feature of Uzbek society until colonial occupation by European Russians (something which many other of my Uzbek friends find hard to accept, but undoubtedly true). Karimov’s assertion is therefore the diametric opposite of the truth.
When I was a child my great uncle told me homosexuals should be horse-whipped. He spent some time in WW2 organising army brothels in Palestine, and acknowledged with resigned stoicism the infidelity of his own wife.
I think Karimov is defending his country from being targeted by Islamic State by echoing Qur’anic belief. In Islam denial of the existence and authority of God is the only unforgiveable sin, so it might not be enough.

Or Karimov, may just be playing to the majority Muslim population, in a popular politics move. Whatever the reason for the dictators outburst against homosexuals, it will go down well in Russia, and at home among the Muslim denizens.
Appearing from Karimov’s position it’s a win win situation.
I see Karimov was re-elected (if you can call it that) in 2015 with a staggering 90.39% of the vote. Russia, and China deemed the election, open and democratic.
The US called the re-election, neither free nor fair. I’m no fan of Karimov, but US, policy makers are a bunch of hypocritical ars#holes. If they could’ve they’d have regime changed Uzbekistan long ago.

The SIS by their very nature are sleazy and don’t much care for any scruples or morality. Every now and again you will make the most extraordinary generalisation. It is almost always profoundly reactionary.
The basic problem is that almost all current media coverage of Islam works on the CIA policy that it is a religion divided into two camps. One of these is that of the shia. The other wahhabi.
Wahhabism and its associated bigotries constitute about as significant a part of sunni islam as the Southern Baptist connection does of Christianity.
Or so I am led to believe, RoS, because I am no expert on the subject.
