Now We Have Your Attention 739

There have been decades of photos of dead Palestinian women and children, and kids being beaten, humilated and imprisoned by Israeli soldiers. The historic killing rate in this “conflict” has been fairly consistent at about 40:1.

None of this ever caused more than a raised eyebrow and a mild tut-tut from the western “liberal” Establishment. I can’t recall camera crews ever pursuing any zionist politicians down the street demanding that they use the word “condemn” of the latest Israeli atrocity.

The paroxysm of hatred in the political and media class, unleashed by a single day of the boot being on the other foot is instructive. It is particularly instructive in their near complete unanimity – what percentage of the discussion on broadcast TV or radio have you heard this last 48 hours given over to Palestinian or pro-Palestinian voices?

Yet it is very plain from social media that the public is by no means as unanimous in their support of Israel as are the political and media class.

But then the public are not bought and paid for.

Asymmetric warfare tends to be vile. Oppressed and colonised peoples don’t have the luxury of lining up soldiers in neatly pressed uniforms and polished boots, to face off against the opposing army in an equality of arms.

A colonised and oppressed people tends, given the chance, to mirror the atrocities perpetrated on them by their oppressor.

This of course feeds in, always, to the propaganda of the Imperialist. A paroxysm of resistance by the oppressed always ends up portrayed by the Imperialist as evidence of the bestiality of the colonised people and in itself justifying the “civilising mission” of the coloniser.

Thus the “Indian Mutiny” became a Victorian tale of rape and murder of British women and of the Black Hole of Calcutta. Thus the Mau Mau were evil butchers, and the IRA were terrorists, which is the modern term of art for those resisting evil and foreign rule.

The Israeli Ambassador to the UN yesterday described the Hamas fighters as “animal like”. This of course is not true. They are people, but people who have been crazed by unbearable levels of injustice and oppression.

I am extremely sorry for all those who die, as in all wars. I am sorry even for the deaths of individual Israeli soldiers, and more so for all the innocents who died and are now dying.

But I will not condemn Hamas.

For this I do not even need to delve into the backstory of Hamas’ initial sponsoring by Israel to split Fatah. They have grown well past that. I do not condemn Hamas because the resistance of the Palestinian people is a reflex response to their slow genocide.

Yes it is an inchoate and violent response. Of course I wish it did not have innocent victims.

The people I do condemn are the political class internationally who, with one voice, put out statements supporting “Israel’s right to self-defence”. A right they grant to the oppressor but deny to the oppressed.

Those are the people who need to be condemned.

“Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI), which is closely linked to the Israeli state, paid for James Cleverly and Suella Braverman to go to Israel just three months after they were elected to parliament.”

Cleverly who is currently in the occupied lands of Palestine, is there to offer the Zionists leaders of the oppressive apartheid occupying military regime any aid they might need including military aid.

Hamas, Hamas, Hamas, far too many people point the finger in that direction. Hamas didn’t exist before the 1970s, I don’t recall the exact year, yet Israel started driving Palestinians out of their homes and land and killing Palestinians indiscriminately since 1945 and earlier.
Without Hamas Israel would have driven all Palestinians out of Gaza.

      • Allan Howard

Here’s a passage from the very lengthy wikipedia entry for Hamas:

In 1987, shortly after the outbreak of the First Intifada against Israel, Hamas was founded by Palestinian politician Ahmed Yassin. It emerged out of Mujama al-Islamiya (also founded by Yassin), which had been established in Gaza in 1973 as a religious charity involved with the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood.[39] Hamas became increasingly involved in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict by the late 1990s;[40] it opposed the Israel–PLO Letters of Mutual Recognition as well as the Oslo Accords, which saw Hamas’ secular rival Fatah renounce “the use of terrorism and other acts of violence” and recognize Israel in pursuit of a two-state solution. Hamas continued to advocate Palestinian armed resistance to end the Israeli occupation.

The beheaded babies story looks more like a propaganda story aimed at demonising the Palestininans.

I think some sort of similar story was pushed by the Western media (babies thrown out of incubators) against Iraqi forces back in the day, the witness to the alleged atrocities turned out not be a witness at all, but some high up official’s daughter, who was told to say what she said.

“The source for the “beheaded babies” claim is Israeli channel i24 News.

A Haaretz investigation previously found that i24 News functions as a proxy for the Netanyahu family, with directives coming directly from the Israeli Prime Minister’s office at times.
i24 News has employed at least 35 veterans of the Israeli occupation forces as staff.
Channa Rifkin is an i24News correspondent who transitioned from the channel’s Social Media editor to the Israeli military, then returned to work for i24News.
Polina Gareav, who works as the Germany Correspondent for i24News while also working as a “social media guru” at DW, the German broadcaster where Palestinians were fired for social media posts.

She began her career as the News Editor for the Israeli Military magazine.
David Matlin, the host of a daily flagship show on i24News, is a former Israeli military sergeant and the regional director for Israel lobby group AIPAC.
Eyal Pinko, who was the head of intelligence in the Israeli Navy before becoming the head of division in the Israeli prime minister’s office, is another correspondent for the channel. ”

our news reports about 40 beheaded children:
“Yesterday evening, the correspondent of the Israeli foreign broadcasting channel i24News Nicole Zedek spoke in a report about a heinous crime in Kibbutz Kfar Az. The information, of course, spread around the world like wildfire. However, after a couple of hours, a refutation came from Tel Aviv officials, who said that they don’t know about anything like that.

The journalist began to make excuses, saying that she was told about this by soldiers who were under stress from what was happening, and could not accurately describe what they saw. However, the fake has already begun to live its own life, so that today it can spill over into the main pages of The Times and other Western media.”

It’s a pity that there is no link to the source in Tel Aviv. If anyone has seen an official refutation, please share.

The ancient Romans tried to demonise various peoples, such as the Gauls and the Jews themselves, by making up stories of them killing and brutalising babies, too. It is the oldest trick in the book I can think of. The moment I heard it, I was pretty sure it had to be propaganda with no further knowledge just from how it sounds.

    • Peter Mo

As for the raping stories. Does anyone actually believe Hamas operatives would have the time to bother. With numerous false narratives surfacing the 1200 Israeli deaths figure sounds very much inflated. Perhaps a figure around 400 more likely.

Ursula von der Leyen and EU leaders this lunchtime, as genocide progresses in Gaza:

“We observe a minute of silence for the victims of the atrocities committed by Hamas in Israel.

There can be no justification for Hamas’ act of terror.

This is a tragedy for Israel, for the Jewish people, and also for Europe.

    Europe stands with Israel.”

Absolutely horrid human beings, this is also a exhibit A for those here that have a pro-EU bent, this is the true face of the EU. Some 20 years ago EU was often critical, at least, of both sides regarding this conflict. Now they cannot even spare 1 minute to stay silent on civilians that have been butchered by Israeli state terrorists. How can one become so brainwashed into ideology when everyone can see the over-the-top destruction that Israel now commits?
Is there not even 1 single party within the EU that questions this psychopathy going on with van der Leyen & co?

      • Peter

“Is there not even 1 single party within the EU that questions this psychopathy going on with van der Leyen & co?”

Very small, but there is one. Step forward the great Clare Daly, one of the two MEPs of the Irish ‘Independents 4 Change’ party.

As many do, you confuse the EU as an institution with the individuals who currently hold power. The present lot are very different from those who negotiated Brexit.

Too few here are condemning the recent butchery of civilian Israelis. Hamas do not represent all Palestinians in Gaza. They are nothing more than a bunch of gangsters who extract tribute from Palestinians in Gaza.
The rackets they run from the tunnels is one way they have lined their pockets; any opposition is wiped out.

The Israeli butchery of civilians does not need outlining by me here. But goose and gander should rule.

There is little enough concern in the west for the Palestinian civilians in Gaza, who are trapped in hell between Hamas head bangers and Israeli butchers. Spare a thought for the retribution that they will be victims of. Hamas are not heroes, they are as crazed as ISIS…_

    • AG

…but you are aware that´s why Netanyahu explicitly said (a while back) that IDF must attack and fight Hamas but under no circumstances destroy it, as Hamas was also created by the Israelis. The Israeli government needs Hamas and their “madness” to “divide and reign”.

Eventually the native population in its majority will prefer anything to war. But as much they despise PLO who are regarded by many as a “collaborator”.

p.s. crazy enough, apparently in Israel the new narrative says “Hamas is no terrorist organisation”, they are a regular army because of the level of sophistication of their operation represents a “state”. You seem to need to inflict major pain to receive the credentials of statehood.

      Some “victim statistics”:
      https://ifamericansknew.org/cur_sit/gazafactsheet.html

      for instance:

Sept. 29 2000* through April 2018 (*beginning of Second Intifada/Uprising)
      Palestinians Killed by Israelis: 9,914
      Israelis Killed by Palestinians: 1,276

Palestinian Children Killed by Israelis: 527
Israeli Children Killed by Palestinians: 1
Gazans displaced at some point during conflict: approx. 520,000
      Additional Statistics

Total Palestinian refugees worldwide: more than 7,000,000
Palestinians held prisoner by Israel: 4,900 (May 2023)
Israelis held prisoner by Palestinians: 0
Palestinian children held prisoner by Israel: 155 (May 2023)

Size of Israel (within pre-1967 borders): 12,906 sq mi

American taxpayers give Israel more than $10 million per day — far more than to all the starving countries of Africa put together.

(This I am posting explicitly because, where I live at least, these facts are not known and not being reported. And of course it goes on: We do not hear any serious reporting about non-EU/US voices on this. What do institutions say in Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Afghanistan, Iraq, Jordan, Iran … Africa, Asia … ? Nothing.)

    • Goose

Unless you live in those conditions with your family, you can’t really comment on what drives people to support Hamas. There is ample evidence that Israel viewed Hamas as useful at one point, in terms of dividing Palestinians from each other: Gaza (Hamas) from the West Bank Fatah/PLO controlled. One look at the map shows why: to resist demands for a contiguous state … to the sea.

Ultimately, this is by US design, for the Palestinians should have support from Egypt and they would have but for the US toppling pro-Palestine Mohamed Morsi and imposing their stooge el-Sisi, propping him up with military aid ever since. He’s effectively snuffed out their nascent democracy by controlling the process. The US’s dark, anti-democratic hand is in everything.

    • Jack

Why is it so important to condemn what Palestinians are doing? Is it to make you feel good, to pose you have the right politically-correct values as the general mob?

If one wants to talk about terrorism, one should of course first and foremost talk about that force in this conflict that kills the most civilians in the conflict – and yes that killing of civilians is very often deliberate, and yes that force is Israel.

I have never heard that Palestinians have the right to defend themselves, not once! All Palestinian that use violence are labeled terrorists. This whole ‘Hamas is the problem’ is just a western-bs-israeli cover for pacifying the Gazans for good. Look at the what the West Bank has been brought by the corrupt PLO: in effect an apartheid enclave and their leaders taking bribes from the occupier to stay silent.

      • Tom Welsh

When you come to think about it, doesn’t “condemning” – like apologising for deeds done long ago by people long dead – comprise a most convenient form of virtue-signalling that all too often replaces action?

If one feels so strongly about some evildoing, why not do something about it? “Condemning” accomplishes nothing except to make the speaker feel superior.

    • Jay

Hamas is a product of the Israeli occupation and, more than that, a conscious product of Israeli government policy who nurtured its development after 9/11. It’s also the only actually existing material force for Palestinian liberation. The only material force that can take the fight to Israel out of Gaza, to fight back, to decolonise and purge the land of the colonisers. There is no other force like that. There is no other magical vehicle in 21st century Palestine for perfect little western moral standards for decency.

People in Gaza have 2 options. Sit there day in and day out and let Israel oppress them and strip them of their freedom, democracy and human dignity and did a slow passive death at the hands of their occupier. Or fight back, and if they die at least they die on their feet. The people there certainly don’t give a fk about the standards of moral decency of armchair warriors in the UK who probably have never even had a fist fight in their lives. They don’t need your wishy washy liberal bullshit support. They do not need to meet the standards of the British, of all people, to liberate themselves from occupation, apartheid and genocide.

      • Goose

Haaretz has revealed Netanyahu’s thinking on Hamas. He always viewed them as helpful in their ‘divide and conquer’ approach. A united Gaza – West Bank stance, based on non-violence was always going to be far more problematic for Israel allowing for powerful Palestinian lobbying in EU capitals and beyond. Netanyahu has always quietly had expansionist ambitions for Israel, and no intention of allowing a two-state solution. A violent group they can’t negotiate with provides the perfect cover for zero progress towards that. We don’t have a partner for peace, he’s claimed it for at least 30 years.

Having a group like Hamas also allows Israel to play the victim of fanatical Islam, which obviously in turn plays well in the 9/11-traumatised US.

        • Jay

Yes, cynical in the extreme and now the same man issues fake howls of anguish.

Very important point you made above too, Goose. Egyptian democracy summarily and brutally overthrown the instant it threatened Israeli barbarism.

    • glenn_nl

      Indeed, Digger_uk.

And isn’t it high time we heard more condemnations of the Russian POWs held at Auschwitz in 1944, who led a rebellion, and actually murdered a few (ehem) ‘workers’ there before they were overcome? Obviously all those involved in the rebellion had to be killed, along with a few hundred others for good measure. Lessons the Israelis have obviously learned very well.

Prisoners ought to be meek and take whatever their captives want them to suffer, and never rebel. And if they do, they deserve whatever they get. Right, Digger_uk ?

    • Shaun Onimus

Hm, let me be clear, I do not condemn Hamas and their murdering of ‘civilian’ occupiers. Let’s chalk it up to Darwinism and the illusion of security. I do condemn Israel and its apartheid state. How many in Gaza have freedom of movement? and How many Israelis hold dual citizenship? One group has the choice, other does not. Let’s condemn those that do not? Even I ain’t THAT thick, thanks.

Regards i24 News, JVL re-posted an article about Marie van der Zyl, the president of the Board of Deputies, dissembling a big fat Nazi-type falsehood about Jeremy Corbyn in an interview on the news channel in August, 2018, in which she said repeatedly (three times in fact in the space of a few minutes) that he was “spending more and more time with terrorists and extremists” and “with people who threaten the security of Britain”.

She doesn’t elaborate about who these terrorists are of course, and the presenter of the program conveniently doesn’t think to ask her who they are, and somehow the WHOLE of the MSM in the UK inexplicably missed such a big story, and van der Zyl herself didn’t think to pass such information on to them. And as you will see at the start of the video clip (4mins in length), she says ‘we’re learning’ that he’s spending more and more time with terrorists, but omits to say who the ‘we’ is or where they learnt it, but whoEVER they are, they didn’t think to pass the information on to the MSM either! And Jeremy has not only been spending time with terrorists in the first place, but he’s then spending MORE time with them, and then even ***MORE*** (they obviously had a lot to discuss) time with them:

The video…. is from August 2018 and it’s of Marie Sarah van der Zyl, the current and 48th President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews. She’s being interviewed by i24News – a right wing Israeli news channel. In the interview, Van der Zyl claims, repeatedly, that Jeremy Corbyn had been “spending more and more time with terrorists and extremists” and “with people who threaten the security of Britain”. She seconded one of the presenter’s outbursts that supporters of Jeremy Corbyn are “a cult” and said that “Jeremy Corbyn had declared war on the Jews at home”. According to Van der Zyl, Jeremy Corbyn’s “hatred of Israel and Zionism runs so deep” and “he cannot separate that from anti-Semitism”…….

Approving the Hamas gangsters having a right to the leadership of all Palestinians in Gaza City, is as crazed as saying all in Gaza should submit to ISIS. In the election they won, they had over the 50% threshold, but it was not an outright mandate. There have not been any more elections.
They then systematically butchered the opposition leadership in PLO/Fatah. There has never been universal support for Hamas, just a silenced and dead opposition. They are tyrants.

Claiming they act in the best interests of Palestinians in Gaza is poppycock. They act only to carry out their own genocidal pogrom against Jews. Their claim to represent what is in Palestinians’ best interest is obscene.

I do not condemn what Palestinians are doing to secure their own state and country, just don’t expect me to go starry-eyed for these mad dogs. Hamas represent only themselves and a warped mindset that justifies killing civilians, same as the State of Israel and its ‘heroic’ IDF…_

  • Goose

Ministers everywhere demanding action from X (Twitter) to stop them providing a platform for both sides. There is disinfo about on both sides, and I’ve seen some old stock footage plus something from a PC game (Arma series) masquerading as current footage. But most people are already sceptical, so why do we need authorities’ overbearing protection? Wouldn’t a disclaimer suffice?

Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease. With so many posts going up, it’s nigh on impossible to monitor them. The majority of complaints appear to be coming from Israel-supportive groups who seem to hate how they can’t control the narrative. Their claims that there are 10,000s of pro Hamas ‘bot’ accounts active sounds like utter tosh.

      • Goose

The only people demanding curbs on X(Twitter) and other forums like this, are politicians and intel officials worried about how sensitive information could potentially be shared widely in an instant.

The demands for instantaneous takedown censorship aren’t public led. Yes, there are a few religious groups and other odd folk calling for a massive increase in censorship across social media, but the general public aren’t.

        • Goose

And how hypocritical are the MSM?

For months the UK’s Independent online and Telegraph btl comments have been the home to probable(?) 77th Brigade activity, calling for the “death to the Russian occupiers!” and all manner of bloodthirsty comments celebrating Russian deaths. Now the same shameless posters have switched to supporting illegal occupier Israel, as if without missing a beat.

When the global south and Asia claim the west are total hypocrites they have a point, no?

ISIS [1] is supported by the Zionist State Terrorist Group – while Hamas is Palestinian anticolonialist liberation movement, who are opposed by Zionist State Terrorist group.

The phrasing ISIS/Hamas just shows how you attempt to dehumanise brown people into a faceless Islamic terrorist pastiche.

Zionist hasbra – fact free – ilogical – easily refuted and utterly depraved – yep par for the Zionist Course
        ( Al-Nusra is ISIS btw) [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vweHtxqnh-Y

        • Lapsed Agnostic

Al-Nusra Front no longer exists, Cabbage, as it’s been subsumed into Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). However, when it did, it was never part of ISIS. Some offshoots of HTS (e.g. Hurras ad-Din) do have links to ISIS, but HaD is currently being slowly taken out by HTS, with a bit of help from CIA drones.

Note: The Syrian Civil War was and still is multi-faceted and fiendishly complex. Anyone who doesn’t know the difference between HTS and BTS without looking them up on Wiki would probably be well advised not to pontificate about it.

          • Cabbage

You are correct it was an “Al Qaeda affiliated Al Nusra. Front” not ISIS. https://www.jstor.org/stable/26351276

The point I was making was that the Zionist state Terrorist group is well known to support Terrorists – so their claims of fighting Terrorism is not viable. The further point was the specific accusation from DiggerUK equating Hamas with ISIS.
They are not the same otherwise the Zionists would support them qed.

          • will moon

“without looking them up on Wiki ”

Lapsed Agnostic, anyone who has to look this up on Wikipedia will have to look this up somewhere else to check Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a battlefield – complete with all the linguistic ambiguity of contested space

I saw a clip last week, before the outbreak of hostilities, of the embattled Israeli Prime Minister announcing that Wikipedia is now part of the “battle space” and telling the watching multitudes that Israel has elite cyber warriors operating in this domain and success was only a matter of time

          • Lapsed Agnostic

Thanks for your reply, Cabbage. Even though I’ve recently been accused by our host of writing ‘utter nonsense’ (for which read: simple arithmetic), I’m usually correct, and when I’m not I often issue a correction:

            https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2023/09/meanwhile-back-in-scotland/#comment-1044932

Of course I’m aware that Israel has been known to support terrorist groups in the past, and it was arguably founded by one or two of them:

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_David_Hotel_bombing

In relation to the (alleged) baby beheadings, there are rumours going that Hamas and ISIS have actually coupled up – which, if true, wouldn’t be that surprising as the latter are only next door:

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_State_%E2%80%93_Sinai_Province

            ———

Thanks for your reply, Will. Whilst I wouldn’t believe absolutely everything you read on Wiki, I remain convinced it’s correct that HTS are a militant Islamist group based in Syria, and that BTS are a fairly famous Korean K-Pop boy-band. I guess when we read on there that the King David Hotel bombing was carried out by Palestinian terrorists, we’ll know that Bibi’s plans are taking effect.

“Ministers everywhere demanding action from X (Twitter) to stop them providing a platform for both sides”.

That’s the essence of democracy, isn’t it? Forbidding ordinary people to express their views about anything that matters.

This world is completely sick and corrupt.
Settlers commit a record number of attacks on Palestinians and legacy media does not want to know. There is a backlash, finally. The media announce this attack, giving zero context.

Palestinians, already abused and blockaded for years, get food, water and electricity cut off while being mercilessly bombed from the air. This is blatant collective punishment. Most of the bombing victims are women and children.

The Palestinians are in desperate need of aid, so America sends aid… military aid… to Israel? In case they need to kill Palestinians more effectively? WTF???
Meanwhile in the UK the home secretary threatens people displaying the Palestine flag. In Canada, their parliament applauds an old Waffen SS officer.

The West has lost its mind. It’s gone.

    • DiggerUK

“The West has lost its mind. It’s gone” …..not quite.

      • Jack

        DiggerUk,

Apparently zionist/israeli terrorism is the solution since you have no issue with Israel that has now snuffed out some 1000 palestinians, including some 300 kids.

Don’t get beside yourself with your troll/virtue signaling.

Media and officials cheering on the massacre of Palestinians, supposedly speaking on behalf of all citizens of their respective countries (including the EU).

There are plenty of things arab states could do now:

Since Israel is wholly dependent on western states and thus complicit in the ongoing genocide, arab states could move to sanction western states: they could cut ties, cut any deal about pending israeli statehood recognition, they could cut oil deliveries, they could kick out western diplomats, they could fund and arm palestinians just like west with ease has armed ukrainians to the teeth.
This conflict goes on year after year because no one is putting pressure to make Israel/west stop their war.

    • Goose

The US is the most complicit.

People in the US State Dept and no doubt the UK Foreign Office know full well Netanyahu’s real aim is to keep importing people into the occupied territories until a two-state solution is completely unviable, that is, if it isn’t already.
They’ve known this for ages and everything they say about supporting a two-state solution is for domestic consumption and it’s a lie.

  • AG

Just like with UKR, one has to remember past misgivings.

In the current case that’s the Oslo Accords from 1993 which marked the beginning of the end of something that could have been called a Palestinian state after the idea for a binational one-state solution was buried.

How do you sabotage a dangerous idea? You deprive it of its elementary economic necessities.

    That’s what Oslo was about.

And all the disasters since is going back to that propaganda victory. Is there anybody in the MSM who would know and who would honestly write about this?

One day those very people who do know first hand about the dark truth of Oslo will be dead. And only a joke of historic scholarship will be left.

Not that it was any good before Oslo but destruction of Palestine was at least called by its proper name. After Oslo all the demeaning, degrading and “there is no such thing as Palestinians”-talk was smoothed out because “we” had a peace deal.

How convenient. That makes it much easier to write benevolent commentaries in the papers about giving peace a fucking chance.

p.s. so, frankly all this chit-chat about condemning the attack now or not or how to, is just chatter in the wind and is besides the point. The Israeli leadership knows this.

    • Tom Welsh

Cleverly, like the Americans, doesn’t do international law. He prefers “the rules-based order”, where he and his pals make the rules.

One of “the rules” is apparently that war crimes can be committed only by people our governments dislike. That would help to account for why hundreds of Allied people weren’t hanged in 1945, along with the Germans and Japanese.

And, as Noam Chomsky has observed, every US President since FDR (inclusive). I would extend it a good deal earlier than that, but tastes differ. Wasn’t attacking Mexico in 1848 and stealing half its territory a particularly vile war crime? Or murdering hundreds of thousands of Filipinos and Filipinas?

    • Goose

Why are some of the left celebrating the killings of Israeli Jews? Naomi Klein asks in the Guardian.

No one is celebrating, but many struggle to be sympathetic as they view Israel as a worse state than apartheid era South Africa. Apartheid is often held up as the ultimate example of an evil system in the west. But what Israel does to the Palestinians, in terms of daily injustices and discrimination, is actually worse. Definitely more restrictive, oppressive and brutal than the situation was in South Africa for blacks.

      • DiggerUK

        • Goose

Not justifying it at all. Merely exploring and explaining the indifference to Israeli suffering.

Using a literary/Hollywood example and analogy, it’s like the Capitol coming under attack in The Hunger Games. I doubt few in the cinema sided with its decadent citizens. Contrast Israel’s California-esque pool party decadence, alongside the overcrowded open prison that is Gaza.

Many view Israel as something akin to the cruel Capitol. And Netanyahu as Coriolanus Snow, its autocratic ruler.

          • Goose

            Not just Israel.

The EU leadership increasingly seem out of touch with European public opinion too, like the fictional Capitol’s elite. The lack of democratic debate about positions being adopted by the Commission risk bringing the EU’s whole future into question.

Some reports I’ve read, pass on that it’s settlers that have been the main targets. In the eyes of Hamas, these often armed and violent people who have stolen the Palestinians lands aren’t seen as civilians. People can draw their own conclusion from that.

As for the open-air concert right next to the world’s largest open-air prison, “crass and arrogant” springs to mind. It’s not the first time Zionists have settled down to gawp at the persecuted Palestinian folk; usually the Zionists are cracking open beers and eating snacks and fist-punching the air, as Zionist fighter jets unload on Palestinian residential areas. Is it any wonder that violence has erupted?

          • Ianam

Attending a rave is not the same as enjoying watching jets bomb a city. Insensitive the event was perhaps, but then your own posts are hardly dripping with humanity, and presumably you don’t want to be shot for your own shortcomings in that regard. And it’s not the first time these joyless fuckers and their ilk have slaughtered people attending a concert. Presumably you’ll attempt an argument justifying the killing of teenage girls attending the Ariadne Grande concert in Manchester with the alignment of their government with the Israeli state?

No one with any sense defends the actions of the Israeli state towards the Palestinians in general, and towards Gaza in particular. Many Israelis object and protest loudly against them. The comments of a former Israeli PM from a few days ago, however, are instructive. He was exceptionally critical of the present Israeli government, and very clear in what he would have done to avoid the slaughter of the past few days: negotiate, compromise, find agreement. And he was clear he’d go back to supporting that approach. But at the moment, having seen his country attacked as it has been, he wants to fight back. And the bringing of that man and I suspect many Israelis like him to that position is down to Hamas, who have no issues in killing their own people, political opposition especially, let alone Jewish citizens.

          • Goose

            RepublicofScotland

Quote : Some reports I’ve read, pass on that it’s settlers that have been the main targets.

They’re mainly in the West Bank tho, aren’t they? Israel cleared the remaining settlers out before basically turning Gaza into a glorified prison camp. They weren’t removed for honourable reasons, it was because it was becoming too expensive to protect them.

          • David

            Ianam:

I wouldn’t try to justify the killing of girls at a concert in Manchester, but I wish people would recognise how our (UK, etc.) actions in Libya were a clear step on the path to that result. We are not creating conditions for peace, we stoke hatred instead.

Everything going on now is only going to lead to more bitterness on both sides. Man has a heart problem, and the solution is not political or military.

      • Cabbage

There is no celebration of the death of Jews as Jews. It’s the simply the Gaza Ghetto uprising defeated the occupiers, that the Zionist state Terrorist group has Jewish members doesn’t change the fact Eastern European Terrorists are dispossing people from Western Asia.

I dont’ imagine the Palestinian much care who is oppressing them, and the celebration of the people being able to see their homeland and touch it, not the death of army members, who are living occupied land (population transfer is a war crime) or are of the age to be murdering Palestinian children, and finally are keeping millions of people in an unliviable condition.

The fact that you want to try to recast opressers as having been targeted based on their religous identity is so obviously fraudulent, that it simply fails to evoke sympathy.

Someone attacked for being a Jew – terrible – someone who is oppressing someone else who is attacked as means of stopping the oppression, who happened to be a Jew – the simple fact of their Judaism doesn’t make it somehow worse.

The undertones is simply it’s unfair for Palestinians to resist their violent dispossession by a European Terrorist group.

        • Bayard

Cabbage, the problem is that people don’t want to have to think, they want good guys who can do no wrong and bad guys that can do no right. They then project this dualism onto everyone else. In the Ukraine War, this means that the Ukranians have to be the good guys because the media are saying they are and they were the ones that were attacked. Any facts contrary to this view can be safely dismissed as lies and fabrications, anyone who challenges it can only be believing that the other side are the good guys. The same (lack of) thought pattern is being demonstrated in this latest conflict.

Use of white phosphorus indiscriminately when civilians are involved is considered a war crime. Even American officials have started to condemn this behaviour :

from the commentary section of Norman Finkelstein´s teach-in on Sunday, with criticism re: Hamas

    — “I have posted above, but what do you guys think of this: It seems that any recognition of Israel, or the slightest of compromises, would mean breaking Islamic principles pivotal to maintaining their Islamic identity of Hamas. They, Hamas, state as principle: “In the name of Allah we will fight the Jews and liberate our land in the name of Islam. We will rid this land of the Jews and with Allah’s strength our land will be returned to us and the Muslim peoples of the world. By God, we will not leave one Jew in Palestine. We will fight them with all the strength we have. This is our land, not the Jews’ … We have Allah on our side, and we have the sons of the Arab and Islamic nation on our side (in Milton-Edwards & Farrell 2010, 4). How to reconcile this with your acceptance of the legitimacy of the state of Israel?”

    — response by another reader: “You cannot reconcile the state of Israel with Hamas fanaticism but it is worth noting that the Hamas Charter was altered in 2017 to recognize the 1967 borders. Obviously not everyone buys in, but it also means the doctrine can be, and has, changed, unlike the Koran. http://edition.cnn.com/2017/05/01/middleeast/hamas-charter-palestinian-israeli/

p.s. the ugly truth however is that Israeli governments never wanted any settlement with Palestinians for real.

The idea of a bi-national state was there well before 1948. It had no chance.
The idea of a separate Palestinian state was as much sabotaged.
Eventually any statehood for the Palestinians has become a “non-starter”.

So the ideology of the Nakba – just expel the population – has been and seems to remain the bottom-line of Israeli government policy.

Thus what Hamas is doing – well, they mirror what has been Israeli POV for 80 years (if not more).

No Palestinian state. And for this they use all the force they have.

The IDF will crush armed resistance
The IDF will crush peaceful resistance
The IDF will ignore any condemnation by the UN Security Council, an act that is taking place about twice a year and is vetoed by the US every time since 1967.

The Israeli government will do anything to keep its population on high alert.
    Permanent state of emergency.

Its sad that Nazi-lawyer Carl Schmitt was the major proponent of this political tool.

So what are you supposed to do as a Palestinian? I don’t know.

Leave? Get shot? Give up? Get high and watch TV?

It is nothing but a genocidal intent; that list is not only warcrimes, it is crimes against humanity. It is the deliberate destruction of a people.

The propaganda is pro a RAZING of Gaza, an idea that is openly expressed by Israel’s little helpers, also known as the major western media. Destroying every building, so those who survive have nowhere to live but tents.

There’s very unlikely to be tents enough for 2 million people in the territory or even a tenth of that number, or the fabric to make them. And as we know, the territory is besieged and the Zionists aren’t about to allow UN supplies to be brought in.

The idea of tents is not about real tents.

It’s about portraying the Arabs (living in one of the most urbanised areas in the world) as creatures of the desert, as not worth roofs, as not worth anything stable or secure, “terrorists” that they are. “You thought this was your home? Well we’ll see about that. You don’t have a home. You’re not worth a home. You’re bestial untermenschen.”

Speaking out about Zionist war crimes against the Palestinian people.

“Starving 2 million people who cannot move and are under a land siege and naval blockade is genocide,” Pakistani writer Fatima Bhutto wrote on social media. “This is a war crime.”

“An analysis published earlier this year by the human rights group Euro-Med Monitor estimated that Israel’s 16-year blockade “has impoverished more than 61% of Gaza’s total population” and “left nearly 53% of the population facing food insecurity.”

“In a statement on Monday, the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem said that Israeli officials “who now call for killing, destroying, crushing, smashing, and even starving the residents of the Gaza Strip” in the wake of Hamas’ attack “forget that this is already Israeli policy.”

“At this moment, Israel is attacking in the Gaza Strip, when it is clear that once again many of the victims are civilians — including women, children, and the elderly,” the group added.”

Is it any wonder then that Hamas doesn’t see settlers as civilians.

“Source of dubious ‘beheaded babies’ claim is Israeli settler leader who incited riots to ‘wipe out’ Palestinian village”

“David Ben Zion, is a leader of the Shomron Regional Council of 35 illegal West Bank settlements who called this year for the Palestinian village of Huwara to be “wiped out.”

“Enough talk about building and strengthening the settlements,” Ben David said in a Twitter post on February 26, 2023. The deterrence that was lost must return now, there’s no room for mercy.”

Ben David was quoted in Israeli media proclaiming soon after, “The village of Huwara should be wiped out, this place is a nest of terror and the punishment should be for everyone,” a clear call for the collective punishment of Palestinians.”

“The village of Huwara was at the time the target of violent rioting by settlers operating under Ben David’s watch. Following the settler assault on the town, which resulted in the torching of scores of homes and vehicles, as well as injuries to locals, Hamas characterized the attack as a “declaration of war.”

But Ben David’s call for collective punishment in Huwara was far from his only genocidal imprecation against Palestinians. Indeed, he has used his social media accounts to repeatedly call for war crimes as well as the “deportation of the [Palestinian] masses.”

“The Palestinian people… [are] an enemy,” Ben David wrote in 2016. “We can’t change their barbaric DNA.”

During his failed campaign for the Israeli Knesset in 2021 with the pro-settler Jewish Home party, Ben David described his mission as follows: ”I am committed to the task of restoring the political home of religious Zionism.””

“Ben David appears to have been at the forefront of settler extremism for years. He was photographed in 2015 (below) holding a microphone for the fanatical settler ideologue Noam Livnat, a self-described “radical right-wing messianist.””

Just came across the following Vox Political article:

‘Israeli army can’t confirm that Hamas beheaded babies. IT DIDN’T HAPPEN’

After all the hysteria about Hamas “beheading babies” in the Israeli Kfar Aza kibbutz – including a wave of front-page news stories in UK newspapers [and around the world], it seems only one news organisation has actually sought corroboration of the claim – and found that it cannot be proved.

That organisation was Turkish news agency Anadolu……

A report on the news agency’s website states:

The Israeli army has no information confirming allegations that “Hamas beheaded babies,” Israeli army spokesperson unit told Anadolu on Tuesday.

It was alleged that Hamas’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, “beheaded many Israeli babies” on the Israeli side during the early Saturday morning attack launched from Gaza.

When Anadolu contacted the Israeli army spokesperson unit over the phone and asked about the allegations, she said “We have seen the news, but we do not have any details or confirmation about that.”

This is from Haaretz – it’s account of the attack by Hamas on the Zionist State Army by an Army member – who describes their engagement, the military objective of attacking them, and Hamas fighting the Army.

What’s missing is anything to suggest anything other than a Military operation, no suggestion of atrocities.

“Even before that happened, they had started shooting at the surveillance cameras, and we couldn’t see anything or see where the terrorists were. They also quickly knocked out our electricity.”
“We were told to abandon our positions and hide. We all hid and then forces arrived to secure us. There was one door that we couldn’t close because the lock was messed up, so a whole team sat by the door. The situation was horrifying. Very quickly they knocked out the electricity and there are two doors that open when the electricity goes down.
“At first there was a team from [the Golani infantry brigade], but they were wiped out very quickly. They were killed one after the other.”

    https://www.timesofisrael.com/hamas-worse-than-isis-its-atrocities-worst-since-holocaust-netanyahu-tells-biden/

Like Babyn Yar’: Hamas atrocities worst since Holocaust, Netanyahu tells Biden

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Tuesday that the premier had told US President Joe Biden during a phone call that the savagery seen during Hamas’s onslaught against Israeli civilians was the worst since the mass tragedies of the Holocaust, casting the Palestinian terror group as worse than the Islamic State group.

Netanyahu spoke with Biden Tuesday for the third time since the war’s outbreak on Saturday.

In a readout of his call with Biden, Netanyahu’s office said the prime minister told the US leader: “We’ve never seen such savagery in the history of the state” nor “since the Holocaust.”

“They took dozens of children, bound them up, burned them and executed them. They beheaded soldiers, they mowed down these youngsters who came to a nature festival, you know, put five jeeps around this depression in the soil and like Babyn Yar, they mowed them down, making sure that they killed everybody,” he said, referring to a desert rave where some 260 people were massacred and others were abducted to the Gaza Strip.

“They’re even worse than ISIS and we need to treat them as such,” Netanyahu said, a message that has been used by multiple Israeli ministries and many Israel advocates online, as well as by Biden himself.

the Babyn Yar reference is a sick in-joke and epic gaslighting. they both know Biden is funneling billions of taxpayer dollars to people who celebrate the perpetrators of Babyn Yar.

listen to David Ayzenberg, a Ukrainian Jew born in 1926 and one of the few survivors of Babyn Yar. he says the main perpetrators of the massacre were Ukrainian nationalists not the Germans.

      https://twitter.com/ShoahUkraine/status/1707911003571454451

after the transfer of power in 2014 Ukraine renamed the road leading to the Babyn Yar site after Stepan Bandera, the ethno-nationalist fascist leader whose men committed the Babyn Yar massacre and many more besides.

Netanyahu, Biden, Blinken and the rest know this quite as well as anybody else.

    Just came across this:

Minister ‘very concerned’ as antisemitic incidents up by 324% since Hamas attack

The Community Security Trust said it had recorded 89 incidents in the UK between October 7-10 that it classed as ‘anti-Jewish hate’…….

Mr Tugendhat, a senior minister, said the UK Government took the rise in antisemitism “extremely seriously” as he voiced support for the CST and the police in cracking down on the spreading of hate.

The security minister, who has Jewish ancestry and whose family members were murdered in Europe during the Holocaust, drew parallels between the ideology of Hamas and that of the Nazis in the 1930s and 40s.

“What the Nazis were doing is exactly what Hamas is doing today. It is preaching a blood libel, preaching a hatred for Jews and preaching a hatred that extends around the world,” he told Sky News’ Politics Hub programme……

It comes after Home Secretary Suella Braverman wrote to police chiefs this week saying that waving a Palestinian flag and chanting pro-Arab songs could amount to a public order offence if it could be deemed to be in support of terror atrocities.

Presumably waving an Israeli flag and chanting pro-Jewish songs won’t amount to a public order offence if it can be deemed to be in support of terror atrocities.

The US is the world’s cancer. and cancers usually progress for the worse. I highly doubt any of their chosen leaders could turn it around. It has spread worldwide and we need strong chemotherapy session(s)/operations to rid of it. First step is identifying it. next steps ???

“Compared to Biden GW Bush was a saint”.

It’s hard to make such comparisons between men who are all squeezed up to one end of the scale. As Dr Johnson remarked,

“Sir, there is no settling the point of precedency between a louse and a flea”.

Except that in the case of Bush and Biden it’s more like “a hyena and a vulture”.

Just came across this Intercept article posted yesterday afternoon (as I’m typing this an American guy being interviewed on BBC News 24 just referred to ‘decapitated babies’…. didn’t catch his name, but the presenter finished by saying ‘Thankyou congressman’) which finishes by saying the following:

Meanwhile, in Gaza, as besieged residents lost access to electricity and at least six journalists were killed in bombings, local writers who regularly report on life in the strip reported being unable to do so. “My phone and laptop have died. No electricity as we’re running out of fuel for the power generator, after Israel cut electricity and fuel supplies to Gaza,” one of them, Maha Hussaini, tweeted earlier this week. “I will be off until we find alternatives, This is what Israel wanted, to commit genocide against a silenced people.”

“Beheaded Babies” Report Spread Wide and Fast — but Israel Military Won’t Confirm It

    https://theintercept.com/2023/10/11/israel-hamas-disinformation/

(There’s now a guy being interviewed putting the Palestinian perspective of 75 years of occupation etc, etc)

“… besieged residents lost access to electricity and at least six journalists were killed in bombings…”

The eye of experience immediately notices the passive voice, the agentless acts. The residents “lost access to electricity”, eh? Careless of them. Maybe they should look for it down the backs of their sofas.

And six journalists (only six?) “were killed” “in bombings”. Are bombings acts of God, or natural disasters? You will look in vain through that passage for any mention of Israel, except in Maha Hussaini’s tweet which is quoted word for word.

I don’t believe for one second that that was the intention Tom, and the author of the piece then goes on to quote someone that says what everyone has known for days anyway.
