Here is a further example of the British media “hinting” in an unpleasant way in the direction of gypsies or other travellers: from the Sun: “Football shirts, beer & Pot Noodle left in tribute to 4 men tragically killed in car crash as community left reeling“. The associations being built are “dirty”, “worthless lives”, “disgusting”, “can’t even cook dinner on a cooker and eat it at a table”, “come from a community of like-minded types”, etc., and also “them getting from A to B is dangerous”. It’s very symbolic that a car containing young men who it appears used to enjoy eating Pot Noodles (and whom one can assume weren’t students because the article would have said so) was driven by an irresponsible driver into a fixed house causing fatalities. Dangerous movement of Pot Noodle eaters causes big fire at house of settled dwellers who probably either have a mortgage-backed loan or paid one off. Now the media are shouting out about “tributes” left at the site … but tributes are left at the sites of fatal car crashes all over the country – it’s a very normal thing in Britain – without them getting in the headlines. The Sun might as well say “The barbarians are at the gates”.
Another point is that the Pot Noodle brand is owned by Unilever, and there is no way that a major newspaper such as the Sun is going to mention a Unilever brand in a headline without, shall we say, some dealings with the Unilever public relations department.
