I attempted to subsribe using my credit card but after hitting the submit button it would direct me to open a PayPal account. Is there another way to subscribe not having to go through PayPal.

Craig has published some bank account details in the last few blog posts. You can simply set up a Standing Order at your bank rather than having to use PayPal.
